The new Curtis Sittenfeld -called Sisterhood I think. |
I started out liking this book a lot, but then it seemed to get repetitive and a lot more, well, uninteresting. For some reason I slogged through the whole 450+ pages and then felt I had devoted too much of my small window for reading to it. I'm now in the middle of Z:A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Anne Fowler, which I'm enjoying a lot. I'm hoping to get through it and still have time for TransAtlantic by Colum McCann before they're both due back at the library. Has anyone read The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls by Anton DiSclafani? |
I think we have similar tastes. I just finished a book called Summer Reading, by Hilma Wolitzer. Very different and a quick and easy read. I really liked it. |
Michael Crichton's "Andromeda Strain" and "Terminal Man". |
Yes, I had a very hard time with the book and gave up on it in the middle, which I almost never do. |
Ugh. I read about a book a week and in my entire life, I've probably only quit reading a dozen books without finishing them, or at least skimming to the end. I had to put down The Shoemaker's Wife about 1/3 in. It was truly awful--I do not understand all the rave reviews it go. Same goes for The Light Between Oceans; I hated it but finished hoping that something would redeem it in the end. Recent favorites: Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgeral, Therese Anne Fowler; Life After Life, Kate Atkinson; The Good House, Ann Leary; City of Women, David Gillham; The Aviator's Wife, Melanie Benjamin; Shine Shine Shine, Lydia Netzer (this one's quirky and I can see how people might hate it). All of Louise Erdrich's novels. Mary Coin, which was recommended on here. And I'll second The Interestings and The Fault in Our Stars. Young adult novels are a total guilty pleasure of mine--I really liked Graceling, Daughter of Smoke and Bone (not so much the sequel to this one, though, the name of which escapes me), and the Delirium series. |
15:47 Did you read The Giver series? |
The Shoemaker's Wife is my favorite of hers! So sorry you didn't like it. The Valentine series is also fantastic, as is her young adult Viola series. BTW, The Light Between Oceans is NOT hers, although I don't know who wrote it. |
I absolutely loved The Light Between Oceans. Just finished And The Mountains Echoed. Very good.

Light Between Oceans is a book for people who don't read much good fiction. It was horrible - poorly developed characters, ridiculous plot, I could go on and on.
on my list: Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel The Outsider by Jimmy Conners Brother, I Am Dying by Edwidge Danticat |
The Ice Princess |
I did not like The Shining Girls. If I had lowered my expectations and wanted a mass market type beach read I would have enjoyed it more, perhaps. I really liked State of Wonder by Ann Patchett. I'm currently reading Perfume and enjoying it. |
PP, Iliked Graceling, but loved Fire even more. Bitterblue not at all. OP if you like YA, I second Graceling and Fire by Kristin Cashore. |
The Language of Flowers
The Art of hearing heart Beats Walk Across the Sun I loved all three |
You might want to try The Way I Live Now, by Meg Rosoff. YA. I liked it a lot. |
