| I totally buy from craigslist and I can afford new things, too. I'm like a PP - I don't like my house to look like a catalog or too coordinated, I like it to be individual. Have bought several great things on CL! My favorite is an antique Duncan Phyfe style dresser for $100! I'd much rather my pieces look inherited from my grandmother than bought new at Pottery Barn and you can do that on CL without spending a fortune. |
| People in denial about the potential misery of bedbug infestations! |
I don't think bedbugs live in wood. |
| I have bought furniture off of craigslist - I just generally wouldn't buy something upholstered due to the possibility of bedbugs. But dressers, tables, etc? Totally. Buying secondhand is one way to get better quality stuff than you can new. Like you could pay $1,500 for a set of new crappily-made bedroom furniture at the Room Store (which I did, and regret) or you can find something that's real wood and well made that someone on CL is selling because they're down-sizing and it'll last longer. |
Sigh. They most certainly DO live in wood. Terrible misinformation, there. You're getting them confused with headlice. Not the same thing. |
Bad idea, especially if you're talking bedroom furniture. Bedbugs don't limit themselves to upholstery AT ALL. They're perfectly happy with any crevice, though preferring porous surfaces like wood to metal or plastic. They don't limit themselves to textiles or stuffing. MYTH, MYTH, MYTH!!! |
They can live in crevices, not dig themselves into the wood or something. If you're that worried, clean the wood thoroughly and apply heat from a blow dryer. |
Agree. I would never buy used furniture for fear of bed bugs. |
| I am worried about bed bugs |
| I have bought furniture off Craig's List, with no bad ramifications (bedbugs, etc.) I have only bought wood furniture. I bought a gorgeous old mahogany secretary desk; looks stunning in our living room. I bought a four-poster bed for our master bedrooms; also looks gorgeous. And I have bought two indoor-outdoor chairs, which we actually use indoors in our family room. (These were actually FREE!). Oh! And I totally forgot: I bought a daybed with trundle from a lovely couple in McLean who were downsizing; that is now in my DD's bedroom and is her bed! |
I am the 10:44 poster. Yes, this!! I love mixing and matching and I much prefer old, classic furniture which has stood the test of time and looks like it has been passed down from generation to generation (I do have some of this, so I mix and match with the stuff I also have gotten from CL) than to look cookie-cutter like it was staged by some model home = dime-a-dozen look. |
| Most of my furniture comes from craigslist and IKEA and I get compliments all the time. Recent finds: dresser, Persian rugs, oval coffee table, massive dining table and bench set from the World Market, Pottery Barn sectional etc. I love it. |
| I want shit coordinated |
| When I moved to a smaller place (empty nester) I put so many pieces on CL for $5.00 just to get it out fast before settlement, and I could not be the only one! People got real deals on my stuff, so I say keep at it, you never know. |
