Used both, prefer the Ameda for whatever it's worth. Medela has a ton of marketing cache behind it, but there are lots of fans for both brands.
I have united as well and was not able to get medela at all. I got the lansinoh from lucina because the options were slim with edgepark and byram and I wanted something that was battery operated as well as plug in. I haven't tried it yet, because I have been borrowing my friend's medela, but it came 2 days after I ordered it. And their service was helpful when I called to order it. I didn't like that byram didn't have their options online, but when I wrote to them only the ameda was available. Same with edgepark.
I just ordered today. Options were ameda from Byram, ameda or playtext from edge park, and lucina, rumble tuff (out of stock), or lansinoh from lucinacare. I went with the lansinoh.

UHC will only cover a hospital grade is your baby is in NICU or has a feeding anomaly. Lucina's Melodi has a closed system and 16 hour battery!

Yes I also heard Melodi was great from my friend...she used it for 7 months and loved it.

Just curious if anything's changed since this thread started on the ordering front - has anyone been able to order their pump before giving birth? Thanks.
I just called Byrum today and they only offer Hygeia or Amenda pums and with UHC the baby has to be born which is TOTALLY backwards. Hygeia looks good, but can't find a local place that sells accessories.
cool, thanks!
Is there any update on this? Especially regarding the hospital pump?
With united I was able to get my pump through bryam 30 days before my due date. I ordered it online through their website and had a great experience. It showed up 5 days later on my doorstep!
When I was pregnant, I was concerned about not being able to get a pump prior to birth. I spoke to a lactation consultant friend of mine, and her take on the matter was that if I really needed a pump in the early days, I should probably be renting a hospital grade pump anyway, not an insurance company pump, since the hospital grade ones would be much better at helping with the kinds of issues that happen early on, and would be able to yield a lot more milk and keep my supply up better. This reassured me so I just went ahead and ordered the insurance company pump after my son was born, and figured I'd rent a hospital pump if I needed one sooner (which I didn't!).
I'm not due til September, but I just called UHC about this the other day. They said that I could get it up to 30 days before delivery. They gave me 4 options to order from; Byram, Edgepark, Genadyne and Target. For Target they said to just go up to the pharmacy counter and they'll place the order for you. You can't just buy it off of the shelf. Has anyone gone through Target yet?

I am not due until November I have Unitedhealthcare Community Plan (in New York) I was told to call Lucina care. With Lucina care you can order the pump at any point during pregnancy, however, they only offer the following pumps:
1. Lansinoh Signature Pro BP 2. Dr. Browns Double Electric BP 3. NUK Expressive Double Electric BP 4. Rumble Tuff Double Electric BP 5. Lucina Melodi One Advance BP With my daughter I had difficulty breast feeding as the medela pump I had did not completely express my milk and I had blocked ducts ultimately leading to mastitis. This time around I am extremely apprehensive with the whole process and wanted to get a hospital grade pump to avoid any and all set backs. Of the ones above I went with Lucina Melodi because it has a rechargeable battery which none of the other pumps do, it is hospital grade, and has SS technology built into it and was told that through observational studies mothers have gotten either 20-25% more milk using it. Despite the fact that Lucina Melodi is on back order because of its high demand I ordered it anyway considering I still have time. I will keep all posted as to the timing of my order. I hope this helps... |
Pp any update?
I ordered a Hygeia from Byram. I was able to get the pump 30 days before my scheduled c-section date. I ordered online and it was really easy. I had several other pumps to choose from too. I had a Medela for my first DD so I went with the Hygeia to try something new.
