I think there were 10 or so kids left behind. And as a YY parent who can't afford a international trip for my 10yo (even saving for 3+ years). This year's trip had high attendance (including one or both parents). But future years will not have the YY Board providing $50k to the class for the trip. So, I hope that we can come up with a better plan for the kids staying behind during future trips.

And don't tell me to post on the YY list serve about this. The parent community all know the admin (or admins spouses) shut down the conversation on this.

What is the cost this year for a child and one parent to go? Did parents have to pay the school or pay fees directly to a travel agent or something like that?

New PP. This post is so indicative of why this school gives off such a bad vibe. You saved for 3 years and still your kid isn't on a school sponsored trip? Three years?! Plus an enormous grant from the board and still it's out of reach for every single child? Why does this school always insist on separating the haves from the have nots. Such a bad taste in my mouth every time I say the words "Yu Ying."

Let's not turn this into a hate thread.

As a Yu Ying parent, I can confirm that this trip has been extensively discussed among parents and administrators. People have had the chance to ask tough questions and have them answered. People are aware of the need to fund raise and are really making efforts. No conversation has been "shut down," in fact, they've been specifically encouraged.

I was skeptical about the trip when it was announced, but I'm coming around to the idea. I still would prefer it to be for older kids, but it looks like it was a fine trip as is for both the parents and the kids.

And THIS ^ is the "fight" to which I refer. There's always a fight when YY gets mentioned. Just saying people seemed to have a positive experience and I have nothing to do with YY and never will (kids are too old).

I was told specifically that the admin made funds available so all kids could go. Perhaps some opted not to go, or didn't want to go without a parent?

I think the problem is that a lot of the kids are simply too young to go without a parent. If the parent can't afford $3,500 plus whatever the student share was then they didn't go.

This is true. All the more so if you have multiple kids.

But, having parents on the trip is a plus.

Was there an enhanced curriculum for those kids who were left behind? Any attempt to make their time rich and special while their normal instructional time was disrupted?

Please don't tell me YY just shortchanged and ignored the kids who couldn't go on the trip. That would be awful.

Yes, they locked them up in their classrooms and ignored them for two weeks. What a stupid question.

^ You forgot that they were beaten and forced to watch movies in Cantonese.

Can you name any public school in DC that sent an entire class overseas on a trip any time in recent history? I sure can't. By your reckoning that means they all got shortchanged.

This is your answer? I hope you aren't a teacher at YY because seriously, you're foolish if you don't have a real answer to this question.

What specifically did the kids left behind do during this trip and how was theirs an equivalent experience to the loss of regular instruction?

It's a simple question. Answer it.

The kids who stayed behind were placed in hot rooms with no windows and forced to make iPhones for 12 hours a day.
