It changed my life, gave me the confidence to leave an abusive marriage and work on me. That was 19 years ago, I still feel empowered and can remember several women from my class. We learned each others deepest, darkest secrets and how we process anger. The instructors created profiles regarding our unique histories and setup self-defense scenarios based upon our issues with an instructor who was highly, padded mugging/attacking us. Lots of feedback and support was provided in the class. Lots of instruction, never worried about injury. Through the class, I started thinking about the idea of fighting to the death if ever I was attacked and using my senses to outsmart an attacker. If anything, I find that for me life is about clearly communicating with my voice, my senses, and fearlessly/fearfully weighing my options.

As a result of this class, I am highly observant and aware of my surroundings at all times and I'm no longer willing/able to allow politeness to dominate my reactions when my instincts are cautioning me to trouble, unsafe people & situations. Also, in general I'm more assertive.

I'm considered very nice, but can turn on a dime if I'm fucked with, loved the class.

You seem a little crazy. Good luck fighting a bullet.

According to police, a 22-year-old male victim at the scene told officers that he and his friends had been sitting in the rear parking lot of the plaza when an unknown man approached them. The suspect allegedly pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded money.

But when the assailant became distracted, the victim was able to grab the man's gun, police said. The suspect then fled the scene.

please check out Defend Yourself at www.defendyourself.org --

after looking into the options, this is the one that is most practical, and supportive, and flexible. Plus the teachers work well with young women also, if you have a teenage.

I have to give a shout out to the hands down absolute best teacher in the entire region - Lauren Taylor at Defend Yourself.

She has years of experience, is thoughtful, kind and amazing working with kids and adults of all ages. I just cant say enough good things about her. People who have taken her classes walk out feeling like she has really made a huge difference in their lives. She is so good at helping people to feel safe and not just because she teaches self defense 'tricks', which she does. But more importantly because she gives you a series of things you can do to defend yourself, and a martial arts kick is just one. This wide variety of defense techniques have actually helped me in all kinds of situations -- from dealing with a bad boss to family members. She empowers you to stick to what you know is true and not be pushed around -- and all in a nice way!

I urge everyone on here to take one of her classes. The skills you learn will last you a life time!

Here is her contact info:

I realize that this is an old topic, but have you ever thought about training martial arts? If so, I would recommend also checking out Wing Chun. One of the great things about Wing Chun is that it is said to be the only martial art founded by a woman. If you are in D.C and close to the Takoma Park area, you can come visit and observe a class during every Thursday (no appointment needed) at Wing Chun MD. https://www.wingchunmd.com
