I am the poster above who is using HRT, and my doctor had no problem prescribing it. But, I am very healthy and had no risk factors, so maybe that is why.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

I have had no period for 1.5 yrs. main problem is lowered ability to digest sulfates and absorb trace minerals. I upped some supplements -- probiotics, magnesium, vit. A and vit. K. Try to get regular exercise. Hot flashes are interesting but not life threatening. I try to not get too worked up about them. My favorite "lube" is alba organics un-petroleum jelly.

The WHI study was severely flawed as multiple studies since has shown (most recently a British study). Have a frank talk with your dr (preferably one who specializes in menopause) and get all of the facts before you write hrt off as dangerous. The hrt pendulum swung too far to no after the WHI study and it is swinging back. Unfortunately, the misinformation is still out there and new information has not caught up to the general public.

My quality of life was affected by severe hot flashes with flushing and sweating. I have a job where I interact with the public and have to maintain a calm, controlled demeanor. HRT changed my life and I am just sad that my doctor will probably talk about discontinuing it at my next appointment.

I tried for three years. Nightmare. Then I went back on HRT. So much better for me. Thank goodness my GYN approves.

^^ I have no risk factors and the women in my family live long, healthy lives. Like 20+ years on HRT.

Nice try. HRT did not cause your relatives cancer. If the link were that clear, the FDA would not approve it.

We've known three people with hormone-related cancer - two with breast, one with uterine. At least that's what we were told (by them) - that it was from hormones they took while going through menopause. All were in their 60's at the time of diagnosis. How long do people typically stay on HRT?

I haven't done it, but honestly, I've found menopause far less onerous than PMS. I have gladly traded the mood swings for hot flashes and night sweats. The only thing I've done is adjust my style of clothing so I can take off layers. I find it more comfortable to sleep in work out shirts that wick the sweat off you. Also, since the hot flashes, I find myself getting colder in air conditioning and in the winter, so I find myself keeping a jacket at work and taking a sweatshirt when I go shopping or out to eat.

Have you had your thyroid checked?

How long do the hot flashes go on? I've had them for a couple of years now. I'm hoping someone can give me a reason to be optimistic that they'll ever be gone.

Yes. Thyroid ok. Just post menopause.

I had a hysterectomy and MD put me on HRT.MD Insisted I needed same for mental clarity, mood and quality of life. Said combo HRT of estrogen and progesterone did not indicate same cancer risk as estrogen alone (if I remember clearly.) Stayed on same for a year then decided I didn't need the stuff. No ill effects except for occasional hot flashes. Moral of the story. Don't use HRT unless your symptoms are extreme. Wish I had maintained this posture without using HRT for a year.
