11:04 -- It's spelled Mendelson, and he moved to Takoma recently. I don't think he came from G'town, though.
And don't forget Evans from Ward 2 and Catania & Grosso at large.. So it's Mendelson, Graham, Evans, Cheh, Wells, Catania, and Grosso; seven out of thirteen. As Jeff said, we have elected two white chairmen, Clark and Mendelson. And a bunch of at large candidates. At the polls in Ward 4, I saw whites for Bonds and blacks for Silverman. |

I am definitely not as well informed as I should be - I thought Mendelson had some h's in it someplace. ANd I completely mixed up Evans and Mendolson.
And how I missed Catania is beyond me. that's what you get when you dash off a post. I have no idea on GRosso, though. Interesting there are 7. DC is changing. But my larger point, which was overshadowed by my ignorance, is that there's not a lot of name recognition out there for most of these council members. |
Wells will be in Ward 1 tonight as part of his "listening tour": 6:30 to 8:30 tonite at 1419 Columbia Rd NW. That's the Latin American Youth Center: http://www.tommywells.org/events/ward1listeningtour Stop by and, as you will see, he is a native of Minnesota and they don't make them any whiter. |
You were probably thinking of the German spelling, like the composer Felix Mendelsohn. As for Grosso, he's the one who beat Michael Brown (and several others) in the 2012 election -- perhaps more surprising than Mendelson beating Bolden, since Grosso was a new name for the electorate and Brown was a well-known incumbent. |
A DC political insider once told me that Mendelson is an absolute assassin as a candidate. After losing his first bid to get on the council (which might have been a reach, since he was running as an ANC commissioner for an at-large seat), he has won five consecutive city-wide elections. |
