Another pet peeve
you can't get discover to cancel a card
I've called 5 times over 4 yrs...

They cancelled my card, after never using it for 10 years. Send a letter, with return receipt.

I am loving this thread and could have started it two months ago! An appliance we purchased from them stopped working and after failed repair visits, at least 30 phone calls, and me FINALLY getting to the right people on the phone, they replaced the unit. Which in and of itself was a circus....

We will NEVER purchase anything at Sears again. I really don't understand how they are still in business because there are many websites dedicated to this same subject.

LOL about Discover. They are idiots. When I tried to cancel the card, they told me I couldn't cancel it because I had taken it out under a different name -- my maiden name -- and wouldn't accept a copy of my marriage certificate as evidence of the name change. They wanted the original!!

Sears came and repaired an appliance, then it broke down two days later. I called again, they came back and said I would have pay lots of $$ to replace the item (out of warranty). No thanks. It was during that process that I learnt that the service arm of Sears has a different name. I called a small (one man) appliance repair company, and they repaired the item at low cost and it's still working well. I won't use Sears repair service again.

13:30 here. I paid for the first repair which gave me two days of a functioning appliance. What a waste of money that was.

I hate Sears. They have taken over a week to come to fix our fridge that has broken about 6 times (which oddly keeps breaking about a week after their work is guaranteed).

Then we tried to buy a drier from them. We paid EXTRA money to have it delivered the next day. Well, they didn't show up. They also wouldn't refund our money, since we were making a "new" appointment to have it delivered the next day after that. Again, they didn't show up. Again they wouldn't refund our money because we had to make a "new" "next day" appointment. BS!!!!! This went on for a few days, and so we finally had to cancel our entire order.

Great...we just placed an order this weekend for a new Kenmore Fridge and Dishwasher. I was really excited about it, but now reading this I am terrified.

Where do people recommend shopping instead? It seemed to us that Sears had the best selection of all the places we looked.

It would be difficult to overstate my total disappointment with what Sears has become. We had $16,000.00 worth of central AC put into our house about six years ago. It is an an old but well maintained house in AU park. We were sold a bill of goods by a slick huckster from Sears with shiny pamphlets and dubious claims. We bout whole house air ion filters, humidifiers, state of the art "green" compressors, etc. We had it serviced regularly. Around year three parts start to fail--that is when you find out that the flurry of papers you signed thinking you were gettting "warranties" only covers the most unlikely to wear out ever parts. But the moving parts that are likely to break are conveniently not covered . Add to that the fact that nothing is actually installed by actual Sears employees, just out of town contractors, and you are just so royally screwed by them that you will want blood. You cannot get anyone on the phone to rectify the total crappy workmanship of their "contractors", because you won't discover the depth of this snafu until @ year 3 or 4 and by then you are so mired in, you just pay out of warranty just to get your effingAC to work. I will never, ever by another major Sears appliance or use them for anything ever again. They used to be an American standard of reliable good wokmanship-now they really just peddling junk.

Ha! I thought you were going to rant about Dr. Sears.

I hate them too. They told us it would take 2 WEEKS to come out and service our refrigerator, which totally quit working out of the blue (1 year and 2 months after we bought it, so no longer under warranty.) Grrrrrr.

But then again I hate Home Depot, Best Buy, and pretty much every other place where appliances are sold, so there are no good options.

The terrific old service guy I had out at my house basically said that all appliances are the same, but that factories have "good" batches and "bad" batches so you never know what you are going to get. Lovely. This explains why appliance brands seem to get such mixed reviews and why something reviewed by Consumer Reports as being great can still suck.
