This would really be a wild outcome if the judge rules against Obama

Doesn't this apply to naturalized citizens? I thought a child born on US soil, regardless of the citizenship of its parents', is American.

There are two lawsuits in process. One in Washington State and the other in Pennsylvania. The one in PA is a former Clinton bundler. The judge is reluctant to even begin the process. Regardless of being born to an American, the law states that it's not automatic. OMG what if McCain and Obama are both ruled ineligble and they make Dick Cheney the President.

Gee, if they go after Obama after he was born in a US state, then they need to go after McCain since he was born in Panama before it came under US jurisdiction, right?

Not only was he born in Panama but he was born their BEFORE it became law that military kids born abroad were automatic citizens.

McCain was born as the son of two United States Citzens. Doesn't matter if you are born in Panama City FL or Panama Canal. You are a citizen. I worry about Obama not having that clarity

Even if McCain is a citizen because his parents are citizens, isn't there an amendment in the Constitution about presidents needing to be BORN in the US? Alexander Hamilton was the only US President not born in US soil; I think the change was made after Hamilton.

Are you on crack? Alexander Hamilton was not a US president.

Man, google when in doubt, people.

This thread has really brought some laughs... some intentional, some not, but all equally funny.

Although Hamilton was never president, many of the presidents were born before the United States existed. What the Constitution says is
No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

Hamilton presumably would have qualified under the second clause, and McCain under the first. Although the Constitution does not give a definition for "natural born", everyone seems to think it a no-brainer that the child of two citizens abroad because of military service should qualify. Can you imagine a greater slap at our armed forces than to rule otherwise?

BTW, Wikipedia says Hamilton founded the NY Post. It's too late for me to start checking other sources right now; do any of you know whether this is really true?

Who was the POTUS who was born in the Caribbean?

Wow, the right wingers are pulling ALL the stops out to try to prevent Obama from becoming president.

And if you want to get really technical, what did the original founders mean by natural born? Would this disqualify people born by caesarian, people born from embryos artificially fertilized and implanted in another woman's uterus? I know this sounds ridiculous but this is what drives me crazy when people try to interpret everything in light of what the original founders meant.

Is it that you guys seriously don't know how to use a search engine? No US presidents were born outside the United States. See below:

Fine, if you want another more trusted source, Wiki-hater:

http://www.eduplace.com/parents/resources/homework/pdf/presidents.pdf

That's a Houghton Mifflin school handout.

Or, you could do what I will occasionally do and pick up an encyclopedia.

Again, wrong. It was not the right wingers, it was a Hillary supporter who made this a case.

Not to change the subject... but on the topic of "October Surprise" I thought Obama said that the big reveal he would make a week before the election would be that his real middle name is "Steve".

Is the October surprise that we pick a fight with Syria a week before the election to turn the subject back to military affairs:

DAMASCUS, Syria - U.S. military helicopters attacked territory inside Syria close to its border with Iraq Sunday, killing eight people in a strike the Syrian government condemned as "serious aggression."
