Anyone watch SNL last night?

I just want to add a ditto that the nastiness is unnecessary. I have tossed out a bit of irony myself now and then, but always with a humorous intent (if sometimes misunderstood).

I would strongly urge someone about to call someone else a "whiner" or some equally derogatory term to pause and consider whether there might not be a more friendly way to make your criticism.

Sermon over. You can now tell me what a pompous ass I am for trying to destroy the main fun you have on the list.

You are a pompous ass.

The only fun I have in my life is making annoying, obnoxiously sarcastic comments to people on DCUM forums, while cloaked in the safety of anonymity.

Don't destroy my fun.

Man, my head is spinning so fast. I'm clearly missing something here. Thought this was going to be a thread for an amusing discussion of SNL but I didn't even catch on to the things that offended people till way down the line. How did we get into this fight -- which seems not to be over politics but something else???

Possibly all the nastiness was a put-on.

Possibly not.

Possibly it's all spam by whoever has been sending the Viagra and Cialis ads to the Rape Kit thread.

Possibly I'm just confused.

Possibly Jeff is writing all the entries to keep the advertisers happy.

Jeff, if I'm you, wake me up.

Wink, wink, and double wink, if case anyone thinks there is an iota of seriousness here -- Live from DC, it's Sunday niiiight!

It's just a bunch of people blowing off steam. Not to worry.

Sometimes this place is surreal.

Live from DC, it's Surreality Naive Lite!

Not a great pun, but "surreal" is a difficult starting point.

Why is this shocking to you?

I don't know, she just doesn't seem like a head-bobbing, arm-waving hip hop gal being the back woods, wild game hunting maverick gal she is.

On another note, I knew Palin was beautiful but seeing her on tv next to the usual "beautiful people" of TVland, I see that she really is stunning.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess.

i don't consider comedians on SNL among the "beautiful people." Stunning is not an adjective I'd use to describe whiney Sarah with a plugged up sinus.

PP here. I know, I know, it's not like the SNL comedians are beautiful but it was that I was seeing her in the context of movie and television stars that I suddenly saw how really gorgeous she is.

On the other hand, being gorgeous isn't really much of an accomplishment in the long run, is it?

I get my SNL skits from youtube and nbc.com nowadays. No need to stay up past 9 PM at my house.

I didn't think the opening skit was very funny. I thought the rap was HILARIOUS. Amy Poehler gets extra credit for all the enthusiasm she brought to that performance despite her big pregnant belly - rapping and dancing around like that is not aerobically easy even when you are NOT pregnant.

When she "shot" the moose I just about peed my pants.

There is an interesting discussion (and transcript of the rap) on how some folks think Palin looked foolish and did not do herself any favors:

Palin was a good sport to participate in the show at all. However I thought her actual performance was disappointing. And not really a performance at all. But really, what COULD she have done that would have maintained the dignity of the office she is running for? The pundits would have been all over her. She had little latitude to actually be funny, but I think she did slightly increase her likability factor.

Now if she could just do something about the ignorance factor.....

Lorne Michaels gave Entertainment Weekly an interview that focused primarily on having Palin do the show. It was a fun read:

I still remember how perfectly Dana Carvey nailed Ross Perot in the 1992 campaign. It was remarkable.

Of course we would b/c we know it would be an insincere political ploy. Well . . . at least she'd be "redistributing the wealth," eh? But then again, I'd question exactly WHO supplied her with the hundred dollar bills.
