My DH went to Cornell, he is not minority, his SAT scores were pretty middle of the pack, but he was a scholarship kid into greenhouses and beekeeping and all that sort of ag thing. He is still the type of person who would do well in a grad program at say UC Davis, Texas A&M, Perdue...he likes natural resources, energy engineering, policy stuff.
My best friend from high school went there as well. She double majored in political science and economics, got a MBA at UCLA, went on to work for a mergers and acq firm and then became a SAHM.
Had another friend who went to Yale for a nursing degree after her BS at Cornell. She's in pediatric AIDS work. Says she would love to see her field disappear but it'll be a long while yet.
Tell your friend to pack his fishing gear (for the lake) and long underwear! Damn it is cold up there.

I see Bowdoin College in Maine is on the list too - another great selective school.

Bowdoin! Those a-holes rejected me (a million yrs ago but still). Ended up going to Yale. So yeah, I'm impressed.
