Does anyone have an inkling of how many open K spots there will be for Yu Ying?

It would be really hard to catch up, but wouldn't YY lobby for earlier grade cut off of new students if odds were it wouldn't work?

Actually, the child would do ok. If most of the class speaks the language, they would pick it up fast.

YY has publicly said that they want to move from 2nd to 1st grade cut off, for exactly that reason. Since they went full immersion in pre-K, it's too hard to integrate at 2nd.

Meant for this below to follow this above.

They are wise to do that, although just to beat the dead horse even more dead (dead-er?), it would be so great if they could test for proficiency starting in 1st or 2nd so they could fill in slots made vacant by attrition. I guess one battle at a time, they have DCI on their hands to implement first.

And while I'm drifting the thread a little, I actually support NOT screening by proficiency for PK, K and 1st. I think keeping it open for ALL kids to be eligible and keeping the curriculum ready to respond to kids entering as late as K or 1st with zero Mandarin is wise given they are a DC public school. But after 1st, would be great if they could start filling vacant spots by testing proficiency. Just my little .02 cents.

It may not have crashed completely, but there was definitely a period when people reported having trouble getting in. It may have just been all the people trying at once, but not everyone who was ready at 8:00 was able to access the page and apply at 8:00.

This is not allowed for legal reasons.

Yes, that is well understood by now by most here. Just saying that that is how it could be.

YY could also take over the dozen lowest-performing DCPS schools and replicate its entire program in each one.

It is well-understood by most that this would cost millions of dollars and might require cloning of certain key administrators. Just saying that is how it could be.

And your point is...? Continuing to build pressure on DCPCS to figure out a way to continue to balance access concerns for the most underserved students with maintaining language proficiency while filling spaces in upper grades is a lot more realistic than whatever you're spewing. Not to mention, obviously, it's not YY's job to replicate it's entire program in DCPS. If DCPS wants to learn and replicate, awesome, I'd hope YY would be accomodating and share. But the access/language balance is doable, which is the only reason that keeps being pointed out.

That was my point, what exactly was yours?

Poor thing, you're obviously bitter and sad. Not only did YY teachers and administrators attend the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Annual Convention and World Languages Expo, but the school was invited to present several lectures.

Additionally, the Head of School traveled to China at the invitation of Hanban (the Confucius Institute) to evaluate potential sister schools, and to explore further opportunities for YY students to study abroad.

Evidently these experts on foreign language instruction, and on China, know something that you don't.

Oh dear, I believe I actually hear the grapes turning sour in your mouth!

If I remember correctly, for those of us who showed up in person, I was #5 in line from around 5am and everyone in front of me was preK as are we. I think the first K parent was around 8 or 9th in line so likely got there around 6:30-7. Once the line got moving we were all timestamped within the first few minutes. So if you are going to try to get in to 1st grade next year, showing up around 6:00-7:00 should be OK if this year's pattern holds up.

So the first K parent who was 8 or 9th in the in-person line would have a time stamp of around 8:05 or closer to 8:10?

If I remember people's conversations after the line, whoever was 8th pr 9th would more likely have an 8:02 or 8:03 timestamp. But you never know who is serious about getting into your desired grade and might be ahead of you, so I would get there super early.

I think my husband was 13 in line and his time stamp was 8:02.

Question as someone who in the future will be applying for a YY PK spot: are your chances better to physically go down there to hand in your app, or is online fine? And if you do physically go down, what time do you need to get there?

Also, they only have PK, right, not PS (for 3 year olds)? My daughter will qualify for PS3 next year. Thanks.

YY starts at PK4. It's probably too early to know what your besg strategh is for next year, when those who applied this year dont know yeg how the lrocess will shake out. Also don't know yet if YY will stick with both options. Stokes went online only for apps this year for the first time. Your child won't even be able to apply until 2014 - a lot can happen in the next 1 1/2 years...
