What's with the trend of pre-teen and teen boys wearing shorts to school in winter

Anonymous
My brother wore shorts his entire 5th and 6th grade years in the 70s. Not a trend.

They seem to be the same group that have to have the latest and greatest sneaker style at the time too.

Haven't seen it much around this area, but I grew up in chilly New England during the same time period as PP and it was common.

Why does it bother you? It's very warm in the school bldgs and warms up during the day outside. I am a school teacher and i see a LOT of verrry nice coats left behind as kids shed them immediately upon arrival (if they make it off the bus!) ... my own DS seems to run 10 degrees hotter than i do. He's also more physically active. i'd rather he left his coat at home than at school.

I used to feel sorry for the kids whose coats were in the overflowing lost & found pile at school, but now I realize that many of the boys probably see the "threat" of those coats going to Goodwill as a great opportunity.

If your son is going to school in shorts (especially those stupid lacrosse shorts) when it is below 40 degrees out, rest assured that they are being privately mocked by other adults (parents and teachers). Know, also, that by extension you too are being mocked.

But as no one has a sense of "This is something I shouldn't be doing..." these days, it won't matter to you.

My 2 sons, now in college, wore shorts almost every day from middle school all the way through high school. DH and I realized pretty quickly that it was pointless to keep nagging them about this. With teens you have to pick your battles and we did. Sure, some of their teachers and friends ribbed them about it, but neither they nor we cared. Why should we? They're excellent students, varsity athletes, do community service, attend religious services regularly, and earn enough in the summers for all spending money during the school year. Most important, they're happy young men with strong family relationships and friendships. So, go ahead and mock.

I will say, however, that they are now both in college in NY, and they do wear pants.

I don't care if petty "adults" are privately mocking my child. Any parent worth her salt knows you pick your battles. Kid isn't going to freeze, and if he is uncomfortable then so be it. Boys aren't the only ones who suffer for fashion.

We live in Colorado and it is a daily battle to get my 8 year old to wear long pants. He just prefers shorts.

Many kids I know that wear shorts in the winter tend to have bodies that run hotter than adults so they get hot easier.

Truly a weird view of things. If you feel it necessary to laugh at a kid's fashion choices then go for it. I can't imagine caring what other people's teen boys wear to school (unless it's offensive or dangerous of course). My DS is in high school and the kids wear all sorts of outfits.

When it's below 32 degrees, for example? You may want to brush up on your science.
And yes, it looks ridiculous and people are judging you and your kid. Judgement is fine and needed to keep society civil.

You are a riot!! I noticed when my DS came home today that he wore shorts to school. He leaves early and I don't usually get up before he leaves so don't see what he is wearing. I highly doubt that his shorts (and those of probably 60% of his classmates) are disrupting civil society! He also wears shorts for outdoor sports practice all winter - avert your eyes!

I ask these numbskulls what they are thinking of and they always say, "I don't get cold".

Yet if there was a fire or bomb scare at their school and they had to stand outside for three hours their parents would be the first to whine that the school didn't provide a warm place for their darlings to stay.

Parents! If you see your boys trying to get out of the house with shorts or with no coat when its 25 degrees ORDER them to change clothing.

Get over yourself.

If my DS gets ME to wear shorts in the winter, he is ruling the house and needs better parenting. If HE wears shorts in the winter he is being an idiot, but in a relatively harmless way.

Do some parenting. Stop letting your children run the house.

It just seems very strange that this would bother anyone or how it is a health concern given how little time the kids spend outdoors and how warm it is here. Totally weird and there are definitely some parents who need a hobby or two.
