No, the kids with IEPs are in two classrooms that have a Sp Ed teacher assigned to the classroom. They rotate English days/Chinese days so YY always has an even number of classrooms in all grades. There are 6 K classes in K, the jumbo class. The kids with 504s are spread out. The other K classes are 18:2 (head teacher, asst teacher). The inclusive classrooms are awesome. Also, the kids whose families send them to an immersion school tend to have mild SN. Most parents were not aware their kid had any issues until they started at YY: True for all immersion schools not just YY. |
Please god stop YY. Stop!!! |
At Bethune...its about a 7:1 ratio in class with 2 FT teachers in each room. |
" Also, the kids whose families send them to an immersion school tend to have mild SN. Most parents were not aware their kid had any issues until they started at YY: True for all immersion schools not just YY."
Please back this up with some data. I'm incredulous, even for YY this come across as ridiculous. |
If your child had a known issue, eg dyslexia, would you really want to throw Chinese characters into the mix? |
Dyslexia notwithstanding (because I haven't read up on it), foreign language acquisition has ben show to help strengthen frontal cortex connections involved in executive functioning. In other words, kids who have ADHD benefit greatly from it. |
Ridiculous, self-righteous, ill-informed, self-serving. I don't even know where to start. Most parents who send kids to an immersion school have mild SN?!? The chutzpah! Oh, and thank you , YY, for identifying and labeling these children so young. You're doing everyone such a service. |
NP here. Please back this assertion up with a link to a study from a peer reviewed journal so we can better appreciate the connection you're advocating. Thanks! |
There is a discussion on the SN board about sending a child with known speech delays and/or learning disabilities to a language immersion program for those interested.
Most entrance yrs for immersion schools are 3/4 yrs old. Many disabilities like ADHD and HFA/Asperger's are not picked up until a child starts school or later like 2-3 grade. Early intervention for these kids is beneficial and help deal with issues before they become a problem. As a parent with a SN, I'm happy that YY "labeled" my child when he entered in preK and are giving him support and services. They do a great job with inclusion. And if anyone knows of a better program (and teaches Mandarin which is a priority with our family) I'm all ears. |
Same, ITS PS3 |
Good point. I'll ask my DC's psychiatrist at the next appointment and follow up because I don't have them at the ready. The doctor DC sees at KKI for testing also said the same thing and that is why language learning is part of DC's overall therapy. Doing a 2 minute google I came up with: http://ilabs.washington.edu/meltzoff/pdf/08Carlson_Meltzoff_Bilingualism.pdf http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22892367 |
