I love this expression, and it is quite apropos here.

Also, let's not forget that when you "move into a higher tax bracket" that doesn't mean ALL your income gets taxed higher. your income above that amount that gets you into the next bracket is what is taxed at a higher rate.

So many of us are dimwits when it comes to taxes...

We lived together and were as good as married but an unexpected/unplanned pregnancy mounted the pressure on us to get married. We just did our taxes, the combined income bumped us into a higher tax bracket and for the first time in my life, I owe the govt. a bunch of money because they think I'm living high on the hog making just over 100k combined in montgomery county.

We still live in our modest one bedroom condo, no debt besides rent, food and everyday living expenses. Daycare at $1500 a month is a bitch. I am so pissed off right now, I find myself snapping at my husband. ..'Welcome to marriage, here's your bill'.

If I had known this, I wouldn't have bothered, the whole marriage thing wasn't important to me to begin with, I just went along to get along. This sucks!

You and your husband should try it with lube rather than using obama.

Flat tax at 15% across the board with no deductions would be fair and have no surprises.

Your problem is that you aren't a SAH housewife with a (white Repub) husband who makes big $. If you were, the tax structure would work to your benefit.

Funny, I used to work at the IRS and never once did I see any provisions in the IRC that provide tax breaks solely to white Republicans....

OP - change your withholding now that you're married and have a child, and you won't have this problem next year. Congratulations on all your life changes.

Are they telling me that as a single person with little responsibilities, I should pay less taxes than a married person with more. How is that fair?

But you would have had childcare expenses regardless if you got married, no? Those two things may have happened at the same time but it would appear that they are not causally related.

And it wouldn't begin to pay the country's bills.

My guess is that one spouse has their exemptions at work up significantly higher than the other.

Are you Bob Dole?

Not to be snarky - but either you or your spouse change your deductions?
Did you have someone who does your taxes...someone you can/could have consulted?
Once you got married...that meant your combined HHI increased...so you needed to have a proactive plan for what you would do for taxes

SUCK IT UP, OP!!!

Um, I got married over 20 years ago and we took a big hit from the "marriage tax"!! Try to blame Obama for that, OP!!

Actually, it does when you're married. Because the highest bracket for married folk kicks in only slightly above the level for singles, and my husband's salary gets us there, all of my salary gets taxed at the highest marginal rate.

So fascinating to see everyone defending the marriage penalty. And by the way, it's republicans that want to do away with it. You libs just don't want to admit that Obama is punishing working women, and Republicans want to help them. The December Obama tax hikes did exacerbate this problem, so quit jumping on OP for being surprised. I'm just betting that most of you haven't started doing your returns, yet.
