Everyone in Baltimore wants to move to Catonsville (for the schools.) Ellicott City is very charming although I'd be careful about being too too close to the river or railtracks. The upper peninsula above Annapolis, Arnold, Severna Park etc., that county is supposed to have great schools. Also Davidsonville, if you afford it and need to be more between Baltimore and DC.

Ellicott City is HUGE. You are just talking about downtown Ellicott City. There is very little housing there.

Drove through the Guilford neighborhood during the holidays. It was amazingly beautiful. Of the nice city neighborhoods, I think that it is perhaps the closest in. You can't use the neighborhood PS, but there are many private options close-by.

What private schools do people on Federal Hill send their children to? How far is the commute?

I meant how long is the drive from Fed Hill to the private schools?

Do Towson and Roland Park fit the bill?

I can't comment on the schools, but I lived in both Federal Hill and the homeland / Roland Park areas while my spouse was a resident at Johns Hopkins. They are very different areas: Federal Hill is more urban with lots of townhouses. It has more restaurants and is walkable to the Harbor (which has a great aquarium and a couple of other museums). The Homeland/Roland Park/Guilford area is much more suburban and quiet (with a lot of single family homes). If you live in that area, there is a bus that goes from the undergrad campus to the Hospital, which is free and runs pretty regularly. This area also seems a lot more kid friendly than Federal Hill.

Also, Ellicott City has some very nice houses at prices that are very cheap by DC standards. But it is significantly farther out.

Finally, I would check out the traffic before buying or renting a place. The highways/major roads are laid out in such a way that you have to drive through the center of the city, with multiple stoplights, to get to the hospital (unless you live in Fells Point) and it can take a long time depending on when you're traveling (a few minutes in the middle of the night; 30-40 minutes in rush hour).

I grew up in Baltimore. I send my kids public school in DC, I wouldn't live in Baltimore for double my salary and you I wouldn't send my kids to public school in Baltimore no matter what what. Ever.

Elliot city, Catonsville, owings mills, maybe.

You can't send your kids to public school in Baltimore. Even the most liberal do goodies I know in Baltimore (poverty lawyers, nonprofit staffers, advocates, professors) lament the fact that they "have to" do private schools. So, if you are he'll bent on living in the city, then make sure you can afford a good private.

Earlier poster here who referenced Mount Washington. I also grew up in Baltimore, and I would never, ever live in Owings Mills; that's about the burbiest burb you can imagine, and it's not even close in. Maybe Catonsville or Ellicott City if I could get a beautiful old place in the historic areas near 95 for an easy commute.

I would live in Mt. Washington in a heartbeat, especially since the ES is decent. Then perhaps private, probably Friends.
