| No Pharma rep covers Miralax, for sure. The doc gets nothing in return for this drug at least |
Wrong. Consumers can report adverse events as well. |
Everyone should be vigilant about meds. Any meds. But you have to look closely at the SOURCE. This is an ad; not a peer reviewed article. This ad is fear-mongering at its best. It scares people because it takes FDA data out of context. Adverse event reporting does not equal causality. |
| One of this country's top pediatric gastroenterologists told me Miralax is safe to use every day. I think I'll trust him. |
You should definitely take Miralax then. Doctors NEVER make mistakes. |

MIRALAX IS NOT SAFE!
I have been a RN for over 30 1/2 years. What I have uncovered about Big Pharma and how they have pushed Miralax and more than likely, have lied repeatedly about their drug is appalling. The list of neuropsychiatric side effects go on and on. Look up the FDA petition against Miralax, submitted in June of 2012. No responsible parent would give Miralax to their child after reading the petition. I talk to one parent almost weekly about the neurological problems their children are now experiencing since being on Miralax. We do not understand why some seem so very vulnerable, but that does not matter. I am amazed at the concerned parents that research this DRUG, a cousin to anti-freeze and decide quickly against giving it. If only I had been so lucky our lives might have been much different. Go to petition and read the long list of side effects, they go on and on... |

Miralax actually helps a lot of people with severe chronic constipation.
The posts seem to be fear mongering. It's actually been around long enough for them to know about long-term use, and the overall consensus is that it is safe -- a lot safer than alternative meds to treat constipation. |

In order to judge a medicatipn it's also important to take into account the severiyy of the treated. My first child has permanent lung scarring caused by aspirating reflux triggered by constipation. Miralax wasn't on the market when we dealt with thay but you better believe we would have used it.
My second child had occasional constipation that we were able to manage with warm baths, adding fiber to his diet and other strategies. My ped suggested that we try Miralax because it was "easier" than baths and fresh fruit. We found a new ped. I also think it's important to note that severe constipation is a tone issue. While most kids may have constipation and no other symptoms, there is going to be a subset of kids for whom constipation is an early sign of more pervasive neurological issues. Some of those kids will be diagnosed while on Miralax but it's correlation not causation. |

Agree with PP. My daughter has kidney reflux that gets worse with constipation. She doesn't take Miralax everyday, but as needed, which is what her pediatric nephrologist prescribed. She was getting UTIs every month, with really high fevers. I'd rather give her Miralax once a week or so then keep her on antibiotics forever or ruin her kidneys with UTIs. Talk to your doctor!

you actually say, "over 30 1/2 years"? Why not just say, "over 30 years"? Why the half? |
| My son actually developed severe OCD shortly after treating symptoms of foul smelling gas with Miralax. When he was younger he was on medication for ADHD that caused severe stool back-up. Was also treated, under the direction of a physician, with Miralax for an extended period. His ADHD got much worse after that. After researching it out, I believe he had leaky gut and leaky brain syndrome all along and the Miralax contributed to his mental health issues. I recently read a study on probiotics and mice relating to mental health and decided to start giving him lots of kefir. He had diarrhea for about two weeks, but his mental health improved dramatically. Have started him on the gaps diet and he continues to improve. Fermented foods will clear out the gut in no time. Had previously tried probiotic supplements for my son's flatulence, and it didn't do a thing. |
| I accidentally pushed send before finishing. Just wanted to mention one more thing about probiotics and gut and mental health. My husband is a physician and recently went to a lecture about probiotics and NICU babies. They've found that babies born c-section don't receive their mother's good bacteria from the birth canal. Consequently, these preemie babies will often have severe intestinal problems. They've been finding that treating them with probiotics and symbiotics, there intestinal problems are diminished and they avoid surgery. |

This is the probioticis article I thankfully stumbled upon...http://www.more.com/health/healthy-eating/probiotics-surprising-way-beat-stress;
This article does a pretty good job explaining leaky brain syndrome. Leaky gut is referred to by medical doctors as hyperpermeable intestines which is caused by overgrown bad bacteria and yeast. My son's primary doc had never heard of the condition and rolled his eyes when I told him the probiotics were helping better than medication. I think most mainstream doctors aren't focused on gut health. They've been trained to focus more on the symptom. With time and more studies, doctors will better understand the importance of gut health, but why wait until then? http://www.publichealthalert.org/Articles/scottforsgren/neuroimmunology.htm If Miralax even has a chance of being toxic to the system, I'd stay away from it. I've had some of the best doctors in the nation treating my son over the years and he's only gotten worse with his mental health. It wasn't until we focused on healing his gut and taking him off his meds,that we've actually seen improvements. Doctors aren't perfect (I know, I'm married to one ) and the drug companies will only report good findings. When my husband was in college doing a study on Accutane funded by the manufacturer, they found that the Accutane was causing birth defects galore in mice. Of course the drug company stopped the funding and refused to allow the students to publish their findings! This was of course well before women taking Accutane while pregnant had babies with severe birth defects. Now they have to be on birth control of the go on Accutane.
