I am new to the area---kid #1 was a preemie, so I am going to take your word on Perinatal Associates for #2! Found out I was pg as soon I moved here. Thanks for the reccomendation. |
My question concerns the Perinatal Associates group of Northern VA. more specifically Dr. Al-Khouatley. Does she/ this group also practice obstetrics and gynecology? i.e. can they monitor you during normal pregnancy and deliver babies too? |
12/28 poster - I called and asked the receptionist the same question a few weeks ago and was told that yes, they can do all your prenatal care. Or, you can go to them and a regular ob. I have my first appt with them next week so I'll let you know if I find out more! |
I didn't go there but I highly recommend choosing a practice where if you are high risk they can see you throughout pregnancy as your primary. I heard that GU was switching to consult only with your primary being a generalist. I did this with my first high risk pregnancy and it is very stressful to have two different doctors who know different things. |
I cannot say enough myself. I have severely high chronoc hypertension and they helped and guided me each step of the way through my pregnancy and saw me so often (like every 2 weeks throughout). I also went in for a routine check, though I had some pain, and Dr. Khoury admitted me to the hospital immediatly for kidney stones. No questions, get int he wheelchair, go to your room, and stay until we are sure you and the baby are fine. On my way back to them with baby number two right now and feeling very confident my high BP will be okay. |
Another vote for Dr Khoury and his practice - they are all amazing there but he personally delivered both my kids and I could not imagine going to any other practice. He is an amazing dr that truly loves what he does and you feel that he sincerely cares about you and only you and your babies well being. He is a big teddy bear. |
What did you dislike Fairfax? I am trying to decide whether I should go there. |
I am currently on the High Risk Prenatal Unit at Fairfax and I can not say enough good things about the nurses here. They do everything possible to make this frustrating and scary situation as good as it can be. I always feel like they have plenty of time for me. They are quick to call a doctor, if they even suspect something might be wrong-- even something tiny. In fact, they just won an award for having the highest patient satisfaction rating in the entire hospital.
The doctors (Khoury, Nies and Bronsky) are amazing, they are truly geniuses in their field. I trust them completely. |
I delivered my first 10 weeks early. My doctor only delivered at Sibley but once she discovered that I was in pre-term labor, she said that Georgetown was the best hospital and NICU for high risk pregnancies and she called Dr. Collea and he admitted me. Both Dr. Collea and Dr. Landy saw me (they tried for several days to stop the labor before deciding to deliver my son) but a different doctor actually delivered my son. The NICU is the best in the Tri-state area and while I was there, babies were being transferred and medivaced there from all over. I met with Dr. Collea and Dr. Pinkert for pre-conception consultations for my second and I think I decided to go to Dr. Pinkert (he delivers at Holy Cross and Shady Grove) for my high risk care because he is much closer to where I live but if I happen to experience Pre-term labor, I would like to deliver again at Georgetown and Dr. Collea said he would admit me because I would want my child to be taken care of by the Georgetown NICU.
In response to a prior poster - I do believe that the Georgetown MFM doctors did change their policy recently and they are seeing patients full time (no longer just on a consultations basis) but that would need to be verified by the practice. If you are still deciding, you can always do a tour of the NICUs. I was so impressed with the amazing care my son received during his five week say. |
George Washington University Hospital also have a level III C NICU (with Georgetown and Children's). Also, their MFM docs see you for every appt as your main OB too. THis is the reason I choose them over Georgetown. They monitor me very closely (I've been going in 2x a week since week 30). |
Hello,
I am under the care of Perinatal Associates of Northern Virginia in Fairfax - Dr. Khoury, Dr. Nies, and also two other Drs I haven't yet met: Dr. Bronsky, Dr. Al-Kouatly. I will admit that I am a pretty overly-senstive person when it comes to how people (Drs) cvarry themselves. I've met with Dr. Nies and Dr. Khoury, here is my feedback: Dr. Nies....sure, she isn't a chatterbox....but she is professional, patient, and I got the "teacher" feel from her. She showed us scans, pointed out the area of concern, etc. She's great. Dr. Khoury: I did NOT get an arrogant feeling from him - I've read that on other reviews of him! He has an immense amount of experience in high risk pregnancies, which is reassuring. He doesn't blow through the door telling you this....he just brings a sense of calm, confidence, reassurance. He answered all my questions and told me to write down any others that may come up, b/c he wants me to ask questions and fully understand. He smiles, and just gives off a warm feeling. Honestly, I have complete trust and faith in them. I know I am now in good hands! |
I also strongly recommend the Bronsky, Khoury, etc. practice at the Antenatal Testing Center (ATC) at Fairfax. I went regularly for monitoring throughout my high risk pregnancy (due to a cord defect) and they saved my baby's life. If I ever have ANY reason to worry I will go there and just have them deliver. My regular OB practice is Andersen Maanavi Muasher Yoon and they delivered me (via emergency c-section after the ATC sent me up) but if I had to do it again, I'd have switched to the ATC. If I am pregnant again and have a normal pregnancy I'd stay with the OB practice, but only then. The ATC doctors and nurses are outstanding.
Just a note about personalities--Khoury and Bronksy rubbed me the wrong way sometimes but I wasn't there to date them! I got used to them and I think they are all outstanding physicians who do care about patients. Fairfax NICU is where you want to be if anything goes wrong. |
I thought that Fairfax, Gtown and WHC/Children's had higher level NICUs than GW?
We were very happy with Dr. Bolan and saw her for all of our appointments. She and Dr. Landy have taken excellent care of several friends. Dr. Bolan was always very responsive to messages. I'd call and see what the current practice is. I also liked the smaller feel of Georgetown as compared to Fairfax and it was closer for me. Good luck! |
Dr. Nies delivered my baby, she is awesome. I agree with other posts, Fairfax hospital was so/so on their customer service and personal care. My baby stayed in the NICU for a month, and though he received excellent and appropriate care, I was just a number to the staff there. The ATC at Fair Oaks Hospital is very nice!! |
I loved Georgetowns MFM practice and have also heard that they are seeing patients through the pregnancies again. |
