The redskins embarrassingly racist name

I'd be willing to bet most people today are unaware that Redskins is even a derogatory term. For those who are unaware of its origin most would say it is derived from things like when you play football you get hot and your face gets red or you get dirty and you look reddish. Maybe you might get a bloody nose and mixed with dirt your face might be reddish. Footballs are called pigskins and they are kind of reddish in color.

It's been so long since Redskin was used in common parlance as a derogatory slur against American Indians, I really don't think people put the two together anymore.

It's really a non-issue today because when people hear the word Redskins they immediately think of an NFL Football Team that won a few Super Bowls about twenty years ago and very few would ever think of George Armstrong Custer and American Indians.

Ha, I posted right after you and we were thinking the same thing! You put it much better, though.

Heard it on "Wagon Train" (1957) yesterday.

Did you sleep through American History 101?

So it is from the 1950's vernacular, but not today's. On "Wagon Train" they may have also used the word "gay" to mean happy and lively, but I doubt you'd hear it that way today. Meanings evolve and change.

As a native Washingtonian who is die hard fan, I agree it's time to change the name. We are the nation's capital after all. Do we want to continue to celebrate our country's shameful past?

It doesn't bother me at all but I think they will change it eventually.

People don't use the word anymore to refer to Native Americans because hopefully they KNOW BETTER. Kind of like the N-word isn't used as commonly anymore.

Doesn't make it right to keep the team name just because the word has fallen out of everyday use.

I agree with previous posters. I've never heard the word Redskins used to describe anything or anyone other than the football team.

I think it's a little odd that the only people who perpetuate the racial slur in our vocabulary are those who are against it having a new meaning IE. the football team.

Words change meaning over time.

Surely you have seen the team logo, its a Native American how could anyone but an idiot think it refers to anything else. It would unacceptable to call a team the nigs, kikes, polacks, wops, or fags. Its a very racist term and you should be ashamed of yourself for trying to defend it. I once had to explain to someone from another country what it meant and they were shocked. I was 17 at the time and their reaction is what really made me realize what a horrible word it was.

Agree. How could anyone who sees this:

really not see the reference? The contention that the term is out-of-date does not make it any less offensive. I would bet that most of the fanbase and more than half of non-football fans would know what this racist reference was. It really needs to be changed.

I, too, am a racist clod.

When kids are being killed with assault rifles and the economy is sailing off a cliff, and the issue you choose to be oh-so-passionate about is the name of a football team, I think your priorities are whacked. I bet you're a PETA radical, too. Irritates the sh*t out of me.

Agree 100%. I grew up cheering for the team. Today, as an educated adult, I know better. I will not allow my son to wear any paraphernelia with the Washington football team name and logo.

Really, you are so limited that you can only think of one thing at a time. Which name would offend you if it was called the nigs, kites, spics, pollacks, wops, rednecks, crackers, PWTs, etc. Exactly which name would touch home for you PP. The name should be changed. It is derogatory and unacceptable.

Sorry OP but I have to agree with this person. Petition for less guns on the street or to change the name of a football team? Sorry, the name of a football team is not what concerns me at all. Bigger problems out there in this world.
