Sorry OP but I have to agree with this person. Petition for less guns on the street or to change the name of a football team? Sorry, the name of a football team is not what concerns me at all. Bigger problems out there in this world.

I'm surprised you have any time at all to post on DCUM with all the work you must be doing to solve the bigger problems of the world.

Exactly. Let's go ahead and call our sports teams the "WigWogs" or "Sand N*ggers" until such a time as world peace is achieved. Let me guess, you're a middle-aged white man with a massive conservative chip on your shoulder. Not surprising you're irritated by simple human decency.

Agreed! Who cares if someone out there is offended by deeply racist terms. I personally am not a red injun, nor am I married to one! So what's the big deal? It's like when black people get upset over eye-rolling black-faced portrayals of shucking and jiving. Grow a thicker skin! I just can't understand it.

Why is "redskin" offensive? Isn't it from the ritual face painting? Couldn't one argue that the name was given as a recognition of the Native American history in this country? Supposedly the head coach at the time of the team naming claimed to be of Sioux ancestry. Although the owner at the time (Marshall I think) WAS a well known racist...

Couldn't be further from the truth. But it's interesting how easily a racist stereotype rolls off YOUR tongue when you try to make your baseless points.

If you have to research 1957 westerns or consult an encyclopedia to be sure a term is derogatory, in contemporary terms by definition it is NOT. In relation to the helmets people just don't look that closely to such logos. Some helmets have zig-zags and lightening bolts. They are just logos and no one gives them a second thought.

What about the poor Irish?? Have you ever seen that unsightly little Irish leprechaun logo the Celtics wear??? Aah it's a cryin shame what the Irish have been forced to endure. Not to mention what the Clippers did to them last night.

OP here. They eventually changed the bullets to the wizards, though. So there's hope. The American Indians have been disrespected again and again and again. It makes me sick. I'm a white female, btw, it's not "personal" other than it's offensive to me as a person.

Abe Pollin vs. Dan Snyder. 'Nuff said.

The laughable "PETA radical" jibe was the giveaway. Also, while we're having racial sensitivity class here, when someone says, "let me guess, you're a middle-aged white guy with a massive conservative chip on your shoulder" that's not a racist stereotype. You silly person. It's no wonder you're a bit lost in this new world we're living in.

When I was living in Alaska I used to see Native Americans wearing Redskins jerseys on a regular basis. True story. So not every Native American is offended. That said, I wish Snyder would change the name of the team because a) it does offend many Native Americans, and b) I'm tired of politically correct Caucasians screaming about the issue so they can bask in their own moral superiority. You're most likely Ravens fans anyway.

Of course you made a racist remark. Thanks for the laughs. Your righteous ignorance has been hilarious to read. Keep posting, hon! I'm loving the entertainment!

Anonymous wrote:I don't even association the name "Redskins" with a derogatory term for American Indians, I associate it with the football team I grew up cheering for in the 1980s.

Maybe because I've never heard anyone EVER refer to American Indians as "redskins". So I guess I've just assumed the meaning in today's vernacular has changed. If someone says "Hey, how about those Redskins", does it ever occur to you they AREN'T talking about football?

Your ignorance or non-association/recognition of the epithet as an epithet is immaterial. It's still an epithet.

I attended Miami University in the late 1980s/early 1990s. Their moniker was the Redskins, too. For years people protested by the Miami tribe didn't object. Eventually, it came out that the tribe was afraid raising a fuss would jeopardize the scholarship for Miami Indians. When assured that wouldn't happen, they admitted they took offense. Miami changed the name to the Red Hawks.

Are you kidding me? Face painting? Seriously?

You can't be this dumb. No one can.
