Unofficial Inaugural Ball Dress Code: Long Dress only?

I do think if you feel "frou frou" in something, it's not the right fit or style for you, but also keep in mind at black tie events, it's better to be overdressed rather than be underdressed!

I'm 40, but I guess when it comes to dressing up, I feel like a 12 year old. Seriously. The last time I had a black tie affair to go to it was a wedding and I was 6 months pregnant, which actually made it much easier somehow.

Black tie is typically cocktail attire for women, and white tie is ball gown/evening gown.

Think all three of your recent choices are totally appropriate. Agree that the the first is a little much. Like the last one you posted, though I think the bodice on the second is probably pretty flattering.

If OP's first three choices were too casual, I am doomed. They looked fine to me. I was planning to wear a cocktail dress but maybe I'll just wear the dress I wore in 2008. It's not like anyone is going to remember it!

The short dresses that I linked above I thought fell into the fancy cocktail dress category which some other PPs said would be appropriate for an unofficial ball. Ok, back to the drawing board. I also tried on this one but it felt way too frou-frou:

What about these?

ugh, I feel so clueless about what to wear to this thing!

The first one is gawdawful. Don't even think about it. The last three black dresses are fine. Any one of them will do. I think the first one is pretty, but a bit dowdy. If you are busty, it might give you some cleavage. It would hang like a dishrag on me.

I like the one with the open back and sequins!

Open back and sequins looks like it would be a perfect choice!

My vote is for this one!

+1!

+2!!!

OP here and I totally agree, this is my favorite dress. But I missed the boat. It's not available anymore at Montgomery or Tyson's and the only sizes online are 4 and 14 and I need a 10. . My DH actually suggested this dress a month ago but I thought it was too fancy and more than I wanted to spend.

I really liked the Calvin Klein dress from your original post - with some big sparkly earrings and bracelet you'd look great and not too casual.

OP, are you here?
