Are there any creative professionals here?

Just waking up and I see this thread has grown....COOOOOL. I am the pp who is the recovering actress from NYC ( Broadway , off broadway , Touring ...the whole nyc experiance...) My hubby played in all areas of the buisness ( cd's, touring, clubs ...occassionally playing for me.) We are here because we thought it would be cheaper and a better place for kids. I now am thinking of leaving because of housing/TRAFFIC, and I have a hard time connecting and having the oppertunity to meet "kindred spirits, too!"

I still work in a realated fid and I love it ( similar to the poster who work with the afterschool enrichment programs.) My issue is I feel I have to adust my quirky personality to be respected by the more serious types in the area. BUT I am an actress so I manage just fine.

I would love to have a coffee club of frusterated creative types and chat !??? Would anyone be interested?

Oh to share a bottle of wine with friends and talk about taking over the world would be so fun!

My business partner is an amazingly talented artist. She is one of the most creative people I know and is so incredibly lucky to be able to use her talent in her job on a daily basis.

that is cool, too! What kind of art projects does she do with the kids? I need new ideas. One time I bought this big canvas, and I divided it with tape, using the rays of a Philippine sun. Then I had each family member paint two sections between the rays, to reflect something about themselves. I took off the tape and it looks so sweet! It hung in the Martin Luther King Library for awhile.

I love the art project you did with your family! What I love about it is that you all painted something that reflects something about yourselves.

We do a ton of different things with the kids. Our goal is for kids to leave having tried something new. We combine visual arts with movement and drama and kids might come into our classes thinking that they are talented artists but cannot act or dance and then leave our class believing they can do all three!

Our most popular class is called Global Arts and it takes you on a trip around the world. The best way to see what we do is to go to the website where there are loads of pictures. You'll probably get some good ideas for things you can do with your kids. www.noodleclass.com

I have seen that program in the backpack mail...I wanted to enroll DC, especially when I read they would do some dance from the Philippines...I was like hey - I know that dance! I do it all the time in my class! But it was full, so next time I'll try to get him in.

I like where this is going!!! The last few posts are so up my alley. I suggested the idea about a creative mommy group for Coffee/wine or whatever ( in a cafe or gallery) does not matter to me.
Can you suggest a way for interested moms to contact eachother and make plans to meet? I am still inda new to this forum and I don't know what appropriate?

ZumbaMama: I live in Arlington.

PP: What school does your child go to? I could probably pull some strings and see if we can't get your child in the class.

Another museum professional here. Definitely feeling a bit displaced compared to NYC, though our quality of life here in DC is so much better that I can't complain. Would love to join a creative moms group...

I'm a photographer. I am from D.C. and have never felt like I fit in. I was ridiculed when I was younger b/c I was different.

I think it’s pretty common for creative minds to feel a bit isolated from the crowd...it’s our nature to think outside the box, see things differently, and find inspiration where others would not. Many artists I know tell me they were the daydreamers or doodlers in school...getting in trouble for not paying attention...but grew up to make careers out of those daydreaming, doodling habits anyway!

That was totally me all through school. I excelled in my art classes, but was totally bored by the rest of them (that is of course unless they were showing a movie and I would be learning while everyone else was asleep!). Actually, the only regular class I really got into was Anthropology...and that was b/c it was quite fascinating!

DD wants to be a photographer. I am looking for schools that offer a good program, but also something to combine it with, like business, journalism or design.

VCU's art program is quite impressive. I've never seen designers and photographers have to go through formal art training like they do there. Corcoran has prestige, but they don't offer any business programs. Any advice on the Art Institute?

Where did you guys go to school?
