Why do I have to buy a present for my child's teachers?

One thing to say for group gifts is that they avoid looking like bribes.

I have a friend (at one of the big 3) who has received everything from expensive electronics to use of a ski chalet from the parents of her students. I can't say why she accepts these gifts. Seems very wrong.
