Mexico City continued to witness a significant level of violent crimes reported in the year 2010. While crime varies widely depending upon location in the city, the U.S. Department of State's critical crime threat level for Mexico City is warranted. Armed robberies, taxicab express kidnappings, car thefts, carjackings, credit card fraud, and various forms of kidnapping are daily concerns. In the categories of murder, rape and robbery, Mexico's Distrito Federal experiences three to four times the incidence of these crimes than does New York City, greater Los Angeles, or Washington, D.C. And Acapulco:http://www.examiner.com/article/bloody-acapulco-mexican-resort-city-rife-with-crime-violence |
| Absolutely not. Husband recently had to go to Mexico and had to have body guards and bullet-proof car the entire time. Never left the hotel - too dangerous. Guards stayed with him the entire time (paid for by client). |
| I've seen so much crap come out of Mexican hospitals. We have patients sign out of there AMA still bleeding and their families drive them here. No way. |
And my DH works for ICE, and he says HELL NO too! |
| Are the "HELL NO Mexico City" and "don't go to the border town" posts really relevant to the original question? What are the chances of a DCUMer taking a FAMILY vacation to these places? They're probably really asking about Cancun to Playa del Carmen and Cabo. No? |
|
The anti-Mexico fear mongering is unreal on here. Please site any specifics for the the number of tourists killed while vacationing in Mexico.
Would you tell friends not to visit Washington, DC for vacation because it is near one of the most violent cities in the US (Baltimore)? Get a grip people. |
| I wouldn't go for many reasons. Not only is it not safe, but with the rampant corruption, you can't even rely on the police or miliary to protect you. Why would you risk it. There are incidents there involving American's everyday, they are just not well publicized....trust me. Also, google "Enrique Camarena".... they tortured this poor guy for days until the finally put him out of his misery..... |
| No thanks to a place where they find dozens of decapitated bodies stacked in a minivan on a daily basis and it barely makes headlines there anymore and its the cops that did it......doesn't seem to mix well with "honey pass the Pina Colada and put some more sun tan lotion on the little Johnny." |
| Why not just take the kids sailing off the coast of Somalia to go pirate hunting..... |
Incidents everyday with American - please tell all the horrific stories you know. And right, there is no corruption here or any other country - is that really a valid reason not to travel somewhere. |
That is just a stupid analogy and shows your ignorance. It's one thing if it is your personal preference not to travel to Mexico but it is another to try and scare others away with blanket false statements about the resort areas of Mexico. I'm sure you all have never even been to Mexico and yet you are all self proclaimed experts on travel to the country. Maybe get out a map and check out where the crime is happening in relation to the resort areas. Educate yourselves before giving bad advice to others. |
| There are currently no US travel advisories in place for popular tourist destinations like Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya and Tulum, the Riviera Nayarit, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara and San Miguel de Allende, Leon or even Mexico City. |

The problem for me isn't the current climate of crime, but he fact that even if you are in a simple accident, the "medical" care is so bad it is likely to kill you. The hospitals have no freaking idea of sterile technique or infection control.
|
This is an over generalization. There are bad hospitals in Mexico but there are also great hospitals and many amazing doctors and specialists in Mexico as well. I have had many family members get excellent medical care in Mexico. I am not saying that happens at every little clinic but if you can pay for it you can access top notch health care. |

The Mayan Rivera is gorgeous - love vacationing and there, and they have excellent medical facilities.
Always have felt safe there. |
