Half a day K??

You prob missed back to school night, but it sounds like you'd benefit from a chat with the teacher. Ours (though she hasn't been reported yelling by DC, so she's prob. a different kind of teacher) stapled her card to DC's assignment folder, with her # and email. She's been super responsive, and I feel a lot better after chatting with her.

K is overwhelming for us all! Get the information that'll make you feel better. Your DC shoudl know how many students are in his class - I bet they count them as they go in/out, fire drills, math class, etc.

good luck!

At OTES the K teachers has 18 students and no assistants. Its not how they would like it I know that. They also fear the principal I hate to say. By they I mean the teachers. They are told to report a lot of stuff to the principal that could be handled by just having more assistants. This actually makes their job harder.

I am not excusing a teacher yelling at the kids. I just can't imagine how patient they would have to be to handle so many young children all by themselves, and not have the support of assistants. My sons preschool at several assistants per class, and their educational goals were not as ambitious as they are for public K.

I'm sorry you are having the concern and I feel your pain!

Just guess how much your preschool teacher and her aides are earning....

My child is in a kindergarten class with 17 students and 1 aid. As far as I know the aids they have in class are to help out the kids who are special needs and have IEP's. That is not to say that the aids don't help out other children too. But the reason for the aid in class is to help kids who have special needs.

Unfortunately, Montgomery County prohibits the PTA (or anyone else) from paying for additional teachers or aides. The K classes at Rosemary Hills have 25+ kids per class with one teacher and no teacher aide. I believe there are one or two aides that rotate between all of the classes. What your child is explaining is probably correct. We know many families who have left this school for private (or chose not to attend in the first place) for the same reason your child complains of.

OP here. I can honestly see why people dislike public school. I did attend back to school night and only one other parent showed up. It was sad. I couldn't even talk to other parents to see how their children are doing. The teacher seems nice but come on, they all do. What happens after the door closes, I have no idea, but it always sounds negative when I ask my child. I will just keep an eye out on it for now and I understand requesting an aid is probably pointless. Do you think switching kindergarten classes would help at all? Has anyone done this? Or would it be too confusing for my child?

OP, I don't think your school will allow you to switch classes. If they did, many people would want to shuffle classes over the year. Of course, it couldn't hurt to talk to the principle.

It would take a very talented and engaging teacher to hold the attention of 25 five and six year-olds all day long. If I had handle 25 kids all day alone, some of who may be unruly and disruptive, I'd be yelling too.

Is private or pariochal school an option for you? If so, this is the time schools start having open houses and accepting applications for next year. You may want to check out other options. You won't find 1 teacher to 25 students at most privates and the kids who are disruptive get counseled out. Also, most parents paying for school won't tolerate a yelling teacher, so there's that too.

One parent showed up?!?! Wow... I know a school with 60% FARMS and Grandmas, aunts and cousins were showing up!

Clearly a troll post - only one parent showed up. Not possible in MOCO.

If the facts of a post don't add up - consider it is a TROLL POST>

OP here. Not a troll post. In my childs class, only one other parent showed up for back to school night. Not to say other children's parents in other classes didn't show up. I have no idea. This was done on the night where the storm and tornado watch happened which could have resulted in no parents showing up as they thought it would have been canceled. How would this strike you as a troll post, I have no idea.
