I know, right? When I'm done with my food wrappers and drink from McDonald's I just throw it out the window. What is the alternative? Keep it in my car until I can get to a trash can? That's crazy talk.

This was in Fairfax County. The judge apparently is notorious for throwing out drunk driving charges, but my friend's lawyer never in a million years thought he would actually hand down a jail sentence on a littering charge.

Tough shit for your friend. I mean, sure, the judge should also throw the drunk drivers in jail, but littering is a crime too. Do we stop throwing robbers in jail just cause other people are murderers and murder is worse than robbery? I hope your friend learned his lesson and stopped littering.

I have a friend who does this, I asked her why and she said "I don't want my car to smell like ashtray." So I was like "Oh ok, perfectly good reason." ...most (not all) smokers are very selfish people.

LMAO!!!!
I'm the OP and this needs to be a bumper sticker! (with a pic of a cigarette butt) Of course that means only the people behind you see it, but at least it's something.

I always brace for the incoming cigarette to hit my gas tank and explode my car.

I hate it too, but aren't the butts biodegradable?

This...I am so effing sick of smokers littering and claiming the butts are biodegradable. I remember a building in Bethesda with just thousands of butts all over the place. SO disgusting.

I think if we collected a huge piles of the butts and dumped them into smokers' yards, they wouldn't be making the "oh they're biodegradable" statement!

I once had someone throw his butt out his window and it went in my open window (back seat) and burned my seat. I didn't realize it for a few minutes (until I smelled it) and was furious. The guy was long gone and probably didn't even realize it happened.

For a long time it baffled me how smokers could toss their butts out the window when they have an ashtray RIGHT THERE. Then, one day, I noticed my trashy neighbor walking by our house, smoking, and he discarded his butt into our driveway. I went out and stamped out the still-smouldering butt, brought it in and threw it in m trashcan. A little while later, as I was puttering about the kitchen, I noticed that the place smelled bad. Like old, musty..yucky smell. I couldn't figure out where it was coming from, and then when I opened the trashcan I realized - it was coming from that single butt in my trashcan! It was NOT still burning or anything -- it was completely put out, but it still smelled SO GROSS. So, I am not surprised that the gross smokers want to get rid of those gross butts.

When I see someone do this at a stoplight, I always have a mind to get out of my car, pick it up, and hand it back saying, "Oh, excuse me, you dropped something!"

Haven't ever actually done it, though. But I am tempted!!

Yes, you're right, my response was hysterical and I need to chill.

Look, you don't fine yourself smoking unexpectedly in your own car. My car didn't come with trash bags but there are some in there now. If you smoke in your car, I'm sure you can figure something out.

I'm with ya, OP! There are few things nastier than cigarette butts lying around on the ground. Keep the gross-ness confined to your own car, smokers!
