Do you know of any white families that get financial aid?

Who gives a rats ass. Financial aid or not your child was the chosen one. Does it really matter?

I understand why people are offended by the question but have to admit that I have wondered about this issue as well. Washington has many wealthy educated families from across the globe and all ethnic/racial groups. It is also the case though that the majority of applicants and the majority of wealthy people in the metro area are white. Given this situation, I see it as a numbers game. I would think that the majority of funds available would be used to help attract students that are visibly diverse. Of course diversity goes much deeper than skin color, but socio-economic diversity isn't immediately apparent. I think that the global learning image is very important to most schools. To put it another way, there would be many applicants who are very similar in every respect to my child except income. Why would they offer us aid? In the early years it is difficult for children to have a special talent (such as sports, music, arts as in the older years) that makes then stand out in the sea of bright well-groomed WASP little ones in NW.

Yes and for elementary school. I don't remember as many troll remarks when people make statements about increasing aid to increase diversity. Implied in the previous statement is that aid goes to diverse applicants. I'm not the OP.

Do you need it for elementary age, high school, or college? If you give us some more details, I'll be happy to provide you a link so you'll be able to apply for it.

Not the OP, but I'd love to see that link, for elementary school. Thank you in advance!

Not what OP was asking. That question would be "does your DC's school use financial aid to increase diversity" which is still borderline but much better than the implied accusation that FA only goes to children of color. OP's question implies some pretty ugly score keeping.

I would put this up there in the top ten offensive posts recently on DCUM right up there with the parent who was angry that her child's doctor died and the parent who posted on the SN board that she would have died a million deaths of she had a child with SN, like us.

Unless this really is a troll.

I find it interesting that people are offended by the original question. This is an open forum, the parent asked a question. Calling these people trolls? really? Get a life. Many are making the issues we face worse by acting so ridiculous. If someone wrote in and said they were AA would the response be the same? I think not.

Of course white people get financial aid. Just as African Americans can't write the full amount of the tuition, I guarantee that there are whites who are in the same boat. That's why I find the OP's question rather ridiculous.

I am a middle-class African American and write a big fat check for $27,000 to offset a $34,000 tuition bill. I am grateful for the extra financial aid as every pennny counts.

I am not sure if there was any underlying meanings behind OP's question as my crystal ball is cracked. So, I will give OP the benefit of the doubt. Yes, absolutely yes, white people DO receive financial aid.

Simple math calculations at our school would confirm this because the amount of African American's at our school (plus the small sprinkling of other minorities) divided by the financial aid fund would not only pay full tuition for ALL minorities but provided Mercedes to drive for every minority parent. I do not have a FULL grant nor did the school see fit to provide luxury transportation.

So, the additional monies are going to other NEEDY families and NOT returned to the school fund. This includes white families.

Absolutely. In fact at my dd's suburban private school, the majority of AA children enrolled pay full freight and a very high percentage of financial aid goes to the white students.

PP here. I personally know several African American parents who are professionals working overtime or holding 2nd part-time jobs to pay full freight or offset the tuition. I know one teacher who (not teaching at our school) asks if you would like fries with that one/two days a week to pay for books and extracurriculars (and she's white). Everybody does what they need to do for the benefits for our children.

African American family here. Son's k tuition at suburban private school is $26,000 per year. Believe it or not, we don't qualify for financial aide, stupid! DH works ONE career/job, I work 16 hours a week b/c I want to. We are not in debt, don't have loans for school, own 2 homes; one is paid for, etc. Tuition is taken from DH's checking account monthly. No checks bounce. We vacation at least 3 times a year! Get real retard!

Poster who says AA's can't and don't pay full tuition, you are stereotyping folks unfairly.

There are a lot of discussion where parents say there school isn't diverse enough or they want to increase diversity. Racially diversity is usually what people are commenting about not economic diversity. Can't they increase diversity with full pay diverse families? They exist. Perhaps the schools would get more diverse families if they targeted these communities and increased their numbers so that a family doesn't feel like their kid will be the only child of their color in their grade or class for their entire school years.

Yes, my child . What a debasing question. This is Washington. Many of the AA families at DC's school are the ones writing the checks.

At my dc's school, some of these families are underwriting financial aide that is provided for families who can't afford the tuition.

At most schools, that I have seen, the % of aid remaining after teacher/admin kids are removed is less than the more student enrollment. If they break it out by level % of families after teacher kids is really low in the lower school.
