I was listening to NPR and the journalist/commentator seemed sincerely perplexed at how direct lying even when clear evidence is everywhere is now acceptable. It is one thing to make a mistake or for a speech writer not to fully understood what positions you have taken (one would think the candidate would point out the problem....) but to continue repeating what is a clear lie that you turned down something that you advocated for and only cancelled after the money was tagged for something else is amazing.
To an extent, the republicans in power were never punished for all the lies about the weapons of mass destruction. Now, it looks like the party has completely decided that truth has no value.
With the media so focused on ratings and entertainment, the 5th establishment as a protection is almost gone. Its sad when you think of all the courageous journalists in the past who risked everything to expose the truth. Now its a game of who has the largest ratings and not wanting to jeopardize getting the next big interview by asking real journalistic questions. I fear that if the dishonesty issues aren't grabbing the same number of eyeballs the press will move in even though these are critical issues. The major channels are all so desperate for the ratings that a Palin interview will bring they will guarantee softball questions, approved questions, and friendly formats.
