Tell me about Annandale HS - why the bad rap?

Because the OP asked why it has such a bad reputation. A reputation goes back a long ways (otherwise it's not much of a reputation). It could very well be that it has improved, but many people will still know it as a place where students are disruptive and the facilities are poor. Then again, maybe it's still not a pleasant place.

In fact, it can. This tells you that things were going on in the bathrooms that the school felt needed to stop - that's almost certainly drugs, drinking, vandalism, sex, and similar. Then it tells you that the school's solution to this was to remove all doors, leaving students no privacy to break the rules and laws....or to use the bathroom. So the students act like criminals, and the school treats them like prisoners. What a great learning environment, I can't wait to send my kid there.

My guess is that you'll send your child to a school with nicer bathrooms; drugs, drinking and sex, if not vandalism, will occur in the stalls; the administration won't lift a finger unless someone ODs on school grounds; and everyone will be happy, because the parents don't see much graffiti and the kids can get away with things they couldn't get away with if they went to Annandale.

Well, either 1- you are totally ignorant and have no idea what generally goes in schools, or 2-you also would never send your child to a school like that and just enjoy being rude on an anonymous forum. Either way, your post doesn't add anything informative here.

Actually, I do know what goes on in local schools. I attended a school similar to Annandale. Schools like Annandale tend to have more of a focus on security related issues because administrators are more sensitive to issues like gang activity and physical assaults. Meanwhile, the schools that rich kids attend have their own issues, which often are swept under the rug and ignored in wealthier communities. I would bet my bottom dollar that the amount of drugs getting flushed through each of Whitman, Langley, Georgetown Prep and Madeira far exceeds the amount at a school like Annandale. But Annandale gets disparaged here because it has ugly, unwelcoming bathrooms, while misconduct at other schools takes place under the radar because parents and administrators are heavily invested in maintaining the community's upscale image.

Writing off a public school based on the condition of the bathrooms seems very shallow. I would try to find out more about the school's academics and extra-curricular programs before making a decision. Schools in Fairfax County have so much more to offer than schools in most other parts of the country.

Many years ago--I assume you mean the 90s, Annandale was your typical majority white, middle class, Fairfax County School. It was a sports powerhouse, especially in football and lacrosse, and many military families lived in Annandale. It had a very different reputation back then.

And to address your first point, most all the Fairfax County high schools had horrible bathrooms back then, and the schools were generally dumpy in appearance.

Check out the school profile on the FCPS web site, and compare the "Safe and Secure" statistics to other schools.

FWIW - Annandale is not upper-middle class at all. Solid middle class with pockets of low income households.

I went to Lake Braddock in the 80s. FCPS had a policy of not putting stall doors on in any of the bathrooms. I went from 7th grade through 12th grade never going to the bathroom at school. Ever. The no doors thing isn't new. It is very, very old.

I don't know about Annandale high school but I do know lots of people who have been thrilled with the education of several of the elementary schools in the Annandale boundaries.

Which is never a reliable source of information about anything school-related, ironically enough.
