African Americans who laugh at slavery don't know any better. They don't know their history. They don't see how this has effected our families over time. They don't understand how even today there is little regard for our lives.

I applaud his mom for taking a stand even if it was after the fact she gave her permission.

This

200 hundred years of killings, rapes, families being separated, physical and mental abuse is funny?

Post like this show how progressive metro DC really is.

His mother did what she had to do.

Had the young man been angry in his video, do you think people would have watched with an open mind? Whites would label him an angry black male and then associate him with poverty and crime.

Humor stems from intelligence, my friend. This young many told a story that drew in ALL people - that helped him receive press and support to right a wrong.

At this point, anger gets us nowhere.

12.20 here.

No the subject matter is not funny. However, his delivery of the story is, very much so. Comedy has a history of shining a light on injustice, while making you laugh all at once.

What I find more disturbing is the pp's trying to rationalize or diminish his experience. "This couldn't possibly happen in this day and age. Right? RIGHT?" Of course it could and probably still does. Racism still exists, it's just become more insidious. The worst sort of racist only shows their true colors behind closed doors.

Now I feel shame about laughing at Eddie Murphy in Raw talking about his green pepper welfare burger.

I hate to admit that it was funny.
He is extremely articulate.

And the narrator stuck some of it in his back pocket. Then when he got home and his mom asked about it, he told her about the field trip without all the details. And the mom misunderstood what really happened and got all mad and went down to the school.

I am black. But I see your point. However, it got me how the story flowed. He never back tracked or said "um". Things connected very well. If my kids had to describe a situation like that it would take forever.

To take twelve or so posts and assume they accurately represent the entire DC metro area, especially when you are misreading some posts, isn't great. The story is terrible, although since I am white I would have no problem with my child going on such a field trip, either to learn how cotton is comtemporarily processed or to develop some empathy for what it was like for someone to pick cotton. What were those bags, 20 feet long? I think they weighed something like 200 pounds when full. He's only two now though, so he has no empathy really for anyone.

He's not a kid, though. He looks to be in his mid to late twenties. Or are your kids that age as well?

12:50 PP here.

Not Angry, just conscious. Yes, I watched the video. I'm more disturbed by the DCUM replies than the video itself.

Slavery is horrendous. Would you guys laugh about genocide, cancer, rape, etc? Many of you would if it was connected to people who you don't view as human.

The title of this thread is racist field trip video but the content is all laughter.

AA posters, what do you think about the term nigglet (as per the video)?

As a regular to this forum I think there is race baiting going on.

Don't like it, find it disgusting and offensive, and I am especially bothered he chose to use it in a story told to a white audience.

Before anyone jumps on me for my last comment re: white audience, there are plenty of groups who find historically derogatory terms even more offensive when used outside the group. Women- bitch, gays/lesbians- fag/dyke, and so on.
