| My son ate a green pepper for breakfast today. Considering he never wants to eat anything, I considered it a victory. |

One of my kids was taking a medication with a side effect that kills appetite. We struggled to keep weight on him and it took him forever to eat. We often just gave him a Boost http://www.boost.com/ . They come in vanilla/chocolate/strawberry. We opted for chocolate with high protein (the more protein the better).
Boost is the one he liked best but there are others. I contacted the manufacturer of various bars/drinks and asked for samples/coupons. There are actually a lot of products out there. |
| My mom gave me spaghetti or left over dinner favorite for breakfast, anything to get me to eat. I still hate breakfast food to this day but no longer eat spaghetti at all! |
I love all the suggestions from other posters . . . but then, I love breakfast, as do my DH and older sons. On the other hand, our youngest is not a breakfast fan. We can tempt her with smoothies, breakfast pizza (don't flame -- you can make it with whole-wheat crust, low-fat cheese and lots of veggies) or the occasional breakfast burrito, and sometimes she'll eat these, but other days she'll have just an apple. It drives DH crazy, but I don't stress about it. She is extremely healthy, and while she is slender, she's also strong and energetic (3-season varsity athlete). Her appetite is great at other meals; she eats a healthy and diverse diet -- including a mid-morning snack and another after school. In fact, she is the most adventurous eater among my children and is an excellent cook herself, having taken a number of cooking classes over the years. So, my bottom line advice to you, PP, is to keep trying to tempt your son with yummy breakfast treats, but also look at the whole picture in terms of his overall health and nutrition. Finally, keep in mind that as he gets older, you're likely to see some changes in his eating habits -- particularly in terms of volume of food consumed. As middle-schoolers, our sons started to eat more and more . . . and now as college students they consume truly frightening quantities of food! (Both are athletes, so their healthy appetites are understandable, plus they make me feel better about shelling out so much $$$$ fpr room and board -- we are definitely getting good value there )

As a kid a kid I couldn't eat breakfast in the mornings, it made me sick. What time do they eat lunch? If it is early, I'd go with some sort of smoothie or maybe lots of peanut butter & some crackers. If he just doesn't want breakfast food, big deal, my family eats pancakes & I have left over chicken & rice soup or pasta for breakfast. |
I have done the same. My child likes a banana blended in. |
|
How about a handful of almonds/walnuts/pistachios and some raisins in a bowl for him to nibble on while he's getting ready?
|
| DS will eat a PB&J sandwich much more happily than something like cereal. Luckily he doesn't mind eating another sandwich at lunch... |
| I think a Zbar and milk is fine. |
| My 12 yo doesn't eat breakfast either. She does have a quick break midmorning so I send her a decent snack for that time and she keeps individual packages of almonds and crackers in her bag in case she wants them when she gets to school. She won't eat yogurt or I'd send that. |
You really need to get a life. A bagel is better than Cheerios? Not. |
| My DD 11 years old cannot eat in the morning. Her am food avoidance has increased in the last year. It doesn't matter what I offer. It could be anything from an ice cream sunday to rice and beans. She simply can't stand to eat. Another DD of mine did not have an appetite in the morning until we got her asthma under control. Luckly my 11yo has lunch at 10:40 at school. Wish I had the answer. She is always ravenous after school. |
Is a Z Bar better than a Pop Tart? |
|
What is a Z Bar?
Has he tried Lara bars? They're just dried fruit and nuts. This would be good with a glass of milk. Not being a breakfast cereal type of person myself I prefer something spicy. Like eggs and salsa, or spicy fried rice with a fried egg. Nothing with wheat and milk as it makes me feel ill. Or how about jerky? Or a smoothie? I make mine with protein powder, almond milk and a banana. |
Zbar has 130 calories. 3.5 g fat, 3 g protein. It's organic and whole grain. Poptart has 200 calories, 5 g of fat, 2 g protein |
