But how do you feel about people on welfare assistance shopping at high priced gourmet or specialty food stores when many not on assistance cannot afford it? And this isn't always people from the projects. They could be unemployed, coddled college grads who chose easy majors flooded with supply and little to no demand. |
if they need internet a really new invention called the library exists |
Why does the middle class have to support everybody else? The poor and rich who do not pay their fair share of taxes? |
so the poor have the kind of feet that do not need support. Good quality shoes are important. I can handle almost anything else in bad quality or even used, but shoes is not one of them |
wrong Nice libraries are in wealthy counties and private schools |
Exactly. Is it the wisest way to spend the money (assuming the kid's parents bought it)? Maybe not. But there are plenty of people living in fancy houses in nice neighborhoods who are also buying iPads they shouldn't buy. |
How can someone begrudge the child of this poster the opportunity to be exposed to educational content at home? This is the big difference; you can't assume that everyone's parents have the same background to be able to educate their kids. If something as simple as an iPad lets them break this pattern, it behooves us all to ensure such access. |
Yes, let's make sure they are even more disadvantaged by cutting them off from the best source of free information ever invented. Make them take the bus to get access to what every other kid has. Never mind that the bus fare will cost more than internet access. What a brilliant way to make sure that ten grand per kid we spend on public education is wasted. |
Are we approving this for poor, white kids who sometimes live in trailer parks, too? Or just inner city, urban kids? |
Which goes to show that you can never trust a Republican governor from California. |
Oops somehow tagged this reply to the wrong post. Sorry. |
I feel they are rarer then hens teeth, and they are great anecdotes to rile up people who want to be riled up. |
Yup. And further, I DON'T CARE. I DON'T CARE. I DON'T CARE. If they are spending the money on ipads or organic ding dongs, I DON't CARE. Doesn't affect me, I don't have to live their lives, and honestly, it is not like not buying an ipad or a pair of shoes or gourmet coffee is going to magically lift people out of poverty. So, I DON'T CARE. |
My family was working poor when I was a kid. We always had a computer, though. My mom spent our tax return on it. We did without a lot of other stuff. We bought a lot of stuff at yard sales and thrift stores. We babysat and mowed grass to earn money for sports fees in high school.
OP, you have no idea how that kid got an IPAD. It may be the one big present he's had in years. You really have to have a hard heart to begrudge a poor kid something small like that. |
What do you consider their fair share? The top 10% of earners pay over 70% of federal income taxes. The bottom 50% pay 0. How is that not fair? |
