Vaginal Progesterone Tablets after IVF - how important are they? Mine keep coming out!!!

Anonymous
I know people at SG who did progesterone injections as recently as two months ago. I don't know any clinic that has just ONE protocol on this. But if its based on metabolism time, then it seems like you want the injection so it stays in your system longer.

Why don't you have them check your progesterone level via blood test? It is very important to keep it up. That way, no 'what-ifs" and if its too low, you can ask about injections.

Good luck!

Really, you prefer the daily injection? While I didn't think the trigger shot was painful, I'd much rather put in an insert than get a shot with a huge needle every day. I would have hated doing that for two months...

I'm not so sure how important the progesterone blood levels really are. What's really important is that you get the progesterone to your uterus, which is achieved with vaginal administration. Not raising the blood levels is precisely the advantage of vaginal inserts - because it means fewer side effects. Everybody always says SG looks at nothing but their stats - so if progesterone injections did anything for success rates, I'm sure they would do them... They never checked my progesterone levels during the cycle (as far as I know).

This is 14:25...and if someone asked me ahead of time, I definitely would have taken the inserts, but as they didn't, its not as bad as I would think. That said, I am a baby....I ice the area, have dh do the shot, massage the oil in, and then use a heating pad afterwards. I also do have trouble with the inserts coming all the way out within minutes, so it happens to work for me. (my butt does NOT look nice, though!)

OP here; i know that my clinic has about 3 options or so, but they basically handed me which one would be best for me based on my insurance coverage (90% covered) and these are expensive but apparently preferred by most women. I was still in a state of 'sedation' so never really asked anything and just took them while groggy and headed home....

I have used the injections for about 16 days before I was prescribed the vaginal suppository, Endometrin. I did not have any problems with the injections until the last week that we had to do it. I was already sore and started to form lumps on both sides of my hips. I started on Endometrin 2 nights ago and I wasn't sure if I was inserting it too deep. It came with an applicator that is about 5 inches long. I insert it all until about an inch is left and then I push the pill. There is no discomfort, no leaks and it has never fallen off while walking or even peeing. I do not use tampons, but I have tried it. I tried the smallest OB tampon and found it really uncomfortable because i really feel it on my cervix. I remember it felt better when I pushed it higher, so I kept that in mind when I did with the Endometrin.

Injections are not the gold standard for IVF progesterone treatment anymore, otherwise most clinics would still use it, which I don't think is the case. I read somewhere that the IM progesterone is not used in Europe at all anymore. And SG, for instance, the biggest fertility clinic in the country, doesn't either. If they thought it would benefit their stats, they would surely prescribe it. Vaginal application gets the progesterone right where it is needed, with fewer side effects.

I literally just finished an FET with Shady Grove and am now 11 weeks pg. They prescribed the progesterone injections for me. Wasn't pleasant but worth it for the BFP.

I much prefer the injection as well. The inserts are messy and I have a lot of residue when it's 3 a day. I'm experiencing the same and tried laying down etc. Fingers crossed all goes well.

If you don't like the suppository, try injection, it is ten times worse.

My first transfer I was prescribed with suppository to which I had an allergic reaction by tenth day. My next transfer the doctor prescribed PIO, and DH had to inject every night. It hurts, get both of us nervous and after a few days my leg couldn't move. Wish I could use suppository instead.

I think SGF does injections for FETs and just suppositories for fresh transfers (based on my experience with both). I think they did some studies to fine-tune those protocols. And yes it felt like it was all leaking out (ick), but my transfer was successful.
