Men in Kilts

This. Even in Scotland, men don't just wear kilts whenever they feel like it. It's like a tux or a ballgown. Yes, some people just wear them whenever, but they're trying to make a statement or are eccentric or something.

Translation: attention whores, weirdos or mentally ill. Do any of these apply to you OP?

I'm picking my kilt out right now from sportkilt for the upcoming Warrior Dash (I'm a woman though). I have male friends wearing them for the race as well, but I would think it was kind of strange if they wore them out on a regular basis.

Madame, I have looked up Warrior Dash and I may see you on the field. Looks like fun.

It will be my first, but my friend has done them several times and claims I will have a BLAST! Doesn't hurt that he's a Marine and promised that NO MAN WILL BE LEFT BEHIND that runs with him If you go have fun!! My group will all be in kilts and war paint.

Go naked and use body paint to strategically camouflage parts!

As a female who wears skirts and light-weight pants, skirts are not all that much cooler when it's hot out.

As an aside -- I was once behind a guy in the TSA line who was wearing a kilt. Interesting pat down.

Did they seize his skean dhu?

Yes. My male Scottish relatives wear kilts to weddings, which makes for very good wedding pictures. But they don't wear them to much else.

If you tried for the kilt, you'd have to accessorize properly to avoid looking like Axl Rose. The whole outfit, if I can remember this right, involves a short jacket, sporran (sort of a fur bag) and a dirk/dagger in the socks. The dagger really completes the look (lots of fighting in Scotland), but you might have trouble entering government buildings with it. Plus, be prepared to answer questions about which clan your tartan represents. It could end up being a lot of work....

A man in a kilt is crazy hot. But only for formal occasions, I'm afraid. If you want to look dapper while staying cool, have you thought of seersucker?

A kilt really ought to be when properly accessorized, which as PP notes, means a dinner jacket and knee socks. These are not gaments for beating the heat.

In cold weather a wool skirt will keep you warmer than lightweight pants, but wool breathes in summer heat is cool.

What kilts are good for: your little band of rebel clansmen is being chased by English soldiers, and night is falling, so you dip your kilt in the creek because wet wool becomes warm next to your body, so you have a nice, warm, wet wool kilt/blanket to sleep in.

100 degree temps: not so much.
