I think you can find comparable things at World Market:

You are joking. Not comparable at all.

I think there are cheaper options than Crate and Barrel, but our experience with their products has been very positive. Quality is certainly superior to Ethan Allen. Copeland Furniture of Vermont makes many of their bedroom sets, and they really do a nice job.

We've got a coffee table with inside storage (I know, not the best description) from C&B and it has stood up extremely well. Heavy use in the busiest room in the house. We also got it on sale, so that made it even better! Maybe keep an eye out for sales? Have you been to the outlet in Alexandria?

I didn't say they are comparable. I said that for a piece of furniture not in a take-a-beating role, C&B prices would not be worth it to me. Neither would those at Ethan Allen or Copeland.

I have a dining set that I love from C&B, but bought it on clearance.

OP - we have a few things from C&B that are also solid wood and I feel that they are very well made and will hold up to the test of time. One thing you could do is ask C&B who the manufacturer is and look for other pieces by that same manufacturer to see if you can find something in a similar style for a lower price.

I have a media console from C&B and I *love* it. It was easy to put together and it has withstood years of use and being moved around. (plus the abuse of a 3-year-old.) that said, I did not pay $900 for it.

how much of that amount is shipping? Might be worth renting a cargo van for $30 and picking it up somewhere.

Why is your husband opposed to world market? We have a number of items from there and they are all very solid. I wouldn't buy a couch or something there, but for a TV stand that just sits there, World Market would be perfect. And a third of the price! It's mostly solid wood stuff and our table, dining chairs, tv stand, and side tables have all held up great.

I agree with this. We only have a few pieces of furniture from C&B and they are well made. We got some great furniture from Macy's on sale that was a fraction of the price of C&B and still doing well. We also got stuff at going out of business sales.

I looked at Wolrd Market and there stuff is only solid wood frame but the rest is MDF and veneer

I definitely agree with this. Quality is pretty good, not sure it's worth price though. Macys has some amazing furniture sales the prices are much better than C&B

I wouldn't buy without eyeballing it first. We have a lot of c&b in our house...some has done well, some not so well. Customer service is good, though. They replaced at no charge (including free delivery) a bench I bought that broke after about a year and a half.

No. Crate and barrel is one step above world market in terms of quality, but at a much higher price point. It is mass market starter furniture, pass if you can.

Before you buy it, check the C&B Outlet in Alexandria. That place is AWESOME and you may find somethng comparable or the exact item for a third of the price. Everytime I see something in C&B, I call or go into the C&B Outlet first or email my contact and have them look out for it. 99% of the time, the item comes in to the outlet. They will give you a courtesy call when it arrives. They also have a ton of stuff that isn't on the floor so give them the model number and have them check the stock room. Great!!!

Yes.

Pottery Barn sucks. Dining room table, bedside table,etc---chip easily. Patio table one season.

We re-did entire family room in Crate and Barrel and it is holding up fantastically.

Wouldn't describe it as starter furniture .... Some people on this forum are insanely snobby.
