Cursive?

Anonymous
Just think how many documents some children will not be able to read because they are not familiar with cursive; not to mention the letters and cards from older relatives who surely are not going to start printing for a teenager to be able to understand. I'm glad my kids learned to read and write cursive, but if they didn't I sure as hell would teach them myself.

The bottom line is, in FCPS they are supposed to be learning cursive.

I'm not the PP you were quoting, but I searched the FCPS site and saw that cursive is part of the POS for second grade, third grade, and beyond. I know for certain that it is not taught at all in my kids' school in second grade, and I've been told by a third grader's parent that they don't teach it in third grade, but just hand out a workbook at the end of the year for the kids to try over the summer. They claim that they don't have time (but they DID have time to watch a two hour movie in the last week.) What I don't understand is how some schools have time for it and some say they don't?

I had to go onto Blackboard to look at the POS, but here is the text under ELA,G3 (grade 3), Standard 8 Write in Cursive:

Benchmark 8.a
Learn and Use Cursive Style
Indicator 8.a.1
Use correct letter formation
Indicator 8.a.2
Practice appropriate handwriting habits
Indicator 8.a.3
Learn to write neatly in cursive
Indicator 8.a.4
Continue to use manuscript form when appropriate

This is from the second grade POS:

Benchmark 10.b
Transition to Cursive

Indicator 10.b.1
Learn basic strokes for cursive

But it isn't happening in real life.

Thanks for this, too. I plan to ask our school principal about this.

Your kids need to know cursive. It is required for the SAT test -- apparently you have to write the pledge and sign it in cursive. My son says it is one of the hardest parts of the test and it takes some of the students over half an hour to accomplish this feat!!!!
