if you are a second generation american who has family in another country... what would you do?

I'm first generation American and I would not go. My immediate family takes precedent over all others. I would not go unless the circumstances were different or my kids were older and could handle it better. Nobody will enjoy seeing me if my kids are whiny and miserable for the whole trip. My kids certainly won't have any good memories if they have memories of the trip at all. I've delayed going to visit my Dad and family because I'm realistic about the logistical nightmare it would be to travel now.

The other spouse takes their own vacation with the kids in the US (visits friends someplace, maybe).

Or, you wait 6-8 months until you accrue more vacation and then all 4 of you go. Kids aren't going to fall apart if they don't vacation for 6-8 months.
