| Mosquito Squad solved the problem for us. People make vague claims about the Squad using harmful chemicals and hurting the environment, but I have never seen anything particularly convincing on this front. So I'll take my chances and enjoy the yard. |
From a 2009 Post article about Mosquito Squad (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/12/AR2009081201110_2.html?sid=ST2009081201665): "There's a bit of debate about misting systems and spraying. The Environmental Protection Agency considers pyrethrum and pyrethroids to be of low risk to humans when used as directed. Jeff Gillman, an associate professor in the University of Minnesota's department of horticultural science, says he can 'think of much worse things to use.' "Gillman's concern is that frequent spraying might kill helpful insects such as honeybees and ladybugs. "Joseph Conlon, a former Navy entomologist and the American Mosquito Control Association's technical adviser, is "not a huge proponent" of built-in misters, and his organization does not endorse them, though it is less concerned about the monthly or one-time sprays. He says any intervention with the 176 species of mosquitoes in the United States should be driven by surveillance." The verdict from these two scientists: not ideal (kills other bugs) but not terrible (assuming you're doing periodic sprays and not misting) We live in CCDC and use Mosquito Squad. For years, from mid-May to mid-October we couldn't stand outside for 30 seconds without being bitten. We couldn't get in or out of our our cars without multiple mosquitoes getting in. Our kids were covered with bites and scabbed from scratching. We tried dunks, garlic, everything. Nothing worked. I don't feel 100% great about spraying, but I can't see going back. |
All the houses on my block, on our side of the street, band together every summer and get a group deal from Mosquito Squad. We get the (slightly more expensive but less harmful) garlic treatment. It makes a HUGE difference in the mosquito population in our immediate area. |
