FIL cannot compliment my children....

What does your daughter think about being tutored by her grandfather? Does she want/need compliments from her tutors and teachers? Or is she a "just the facts" girl who is confident in her performance and doesn't need to be reminded of her functioning?

It sounds like YOU need to hear validation about your child's intelligence and performance. What does SHE need?

Sounds like you're upset because your FIL failed to fall all over himself praising your special snowflake. Have you read about the dangers of excessive praise?

Nasty person.

FIL has shown you what he's like with his past words and actions, so did you actually expect him to agree? Stop seeking validation and approval from someone who won't or can't provide it.

Even though this tutoring session overall went well, in your shoes I wouldn't pursue them. He was patient this time, but a genius who doesn't suffer fools gladly does not a good tutor make. He could get really frustrated and impatient when she hits a roadblock.

I agree 100%.

Teach your child: You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else.

Then she will not be disappointed by not getting approval from others.
