Best place for casual Mexican in DC?

Anonymous
OP here- Thanks everyone! Budget isn't really an issue, I'm more concerned with having a low key atmosphere. I'd forgotten about many of the places mentioned. I'll have to put in some calls and see if any of the spots can accommodate a large group.

Thanks again! If anyone thinks of anything else, please post. Options are good!

A friend was at Lauriol Plaza recently and there was a fight there and the police had to be called. If you used to go "back in the day" a warning that the scene may have changed there...

It's not the fanciest, but La Loma on the Hill is fantastic with groups. They will open one of the rooms on the top floor if you want a private space. It's our go-to for affordable family group dinners for 8 or more.

DC and Mexican food are not compatible. Ever meet a Mexican person here?

I'm not sure if this is the scene you are looking for, but the food at Mama Chuy is da bomb. It's definitely a casual place and it is small. What's the size of your group? They may be willing to give you the entire upstairs or something.

I must be the only one who thinks Rosa Mexicano is way over-rated and way over-priced. I like someone's idea for Oyamel. Food is much better there.

My DH. But, he won't eat at any of the places mentioned here except Oyamel. We also like Oaxaca, but you have to like mole if you go there.

Don't hate on Guapos-it's awesome!

Chipotle.

Just don't be giving any parents who take away their smart phone from their screaming toddlers the stinky eye.

Guapo's is also a good place for groups - we've done a good group dinner there and they were pretty awesome about providing a fixed menu for us (even printed out menus with the 3-4 options for each course). I had a more casual group lunch there once too where 15 of us showed without any warning and they were good about that. Also, Cactus Cantina.

I agree oyamel.. The food is very good. I too think Rosa Mexicano is way too expensive for what it is.

I hadn't thought of Oyamel - good one!
