Tell me your tried and true constipation remedies

I was so badly constipated that I had to get gel suppository. OMG they worked wonders, but the OB didn't want me to take them all the time, especially because I had a cerclage.

Plum Smart worked for me. And I can't remember, are you allowed fake sugar while pregnant? If so, between four to six sugar free candies ought to work. And quickly. And very completely. Very quickly, did I say that? And then after that I would add more fibrous foods and water to prevent it happening again.

Hee hee! Been there, done that, though in my case I didn't know ahead of time that sorbitol had that effect. It was...disconcerting.

I agree with the veg poster re the fruit. I craved fruits with this preg. -- apples, grapefruit, pears and oranges and lots of yogurt. I had a piece of fruit with each meal and usally yogurt for breakfast or lunch. I craved the McDonalds fruit and yogurt parfait and apple walnut salad.

Totally agree with exercise, ground flaxseed*, fruit, whole grains, plenty of water.

Also: beans!

*My grandfather and I have had a long conversation rhapsodizing about the "miracle powers" of flaxseed, something the pregnant and the elderly can equally appreciate! I sprinkle the Bob's Red Mill on yogurt, cereal, smoothies.

Coconut water. It's great for moving your groove. Love it.

The ONLY thing that worked for me was a magnesium drink (I used MamaCalm, but I'm sure there are others). I also got horrible leg cramps and the magnesium helped with those, too. Couldn't live without the stuff!

Metamucil twice a day. After the morning glass I have a cup of hot tea. that seems to get things moving. I have had terrible constipation since week 3!

Same for me and same advice from Doctor. Nothing helps except the miralax or colace. Take whichever one is easier for you to remember taking. I had an easier time using Maalox because I could put it in my coffee every morning but like PP my Dr specifically recommende colace.
