Over the course of a two month period, we normally have more than a million unique visitors. For what it's worth, I don't think that the black community is that much different than the Hispanic community or even the white community or any other community when it comes to having an issue with homophobia. However, the black community is more strongly aligned with the Democratic Party than those other communities. Therefore, the Party and a significant number of community members are at odds on this issue. Add in the fact that many see same sex marriage and such as a civil rights issues and given the close association of the black community and the civil rights movement, the black community gets held to a higher standard. |
The poster you quoted isn't the only person who has posted in response to the people who think all black people or homophobic, or that black people are the number one reason gay marriage is illegal. We're not all the same person just because you disagree with us. ![]() |
OK so are you alternating on the same persecution posts? |
|
I didn't say they "should" be held to a higher standard. I just think that they are. They probably shouldn't be, but there are a lot of things that are true that I wish weren't. |
Its not a double standard Any left voting liberal group would be treated the exact same way. 90% dem and 60-70% antigay is just wrong.
|
Democrat=/= liberal.
I'm a Dem, I'm liberal, but not everyone who is a Democrat is liberal. From just speaking from my experience, the vast majority of black people I've come across who are against gay marriage are also ultra conservative and religious. They're not just against gay marriage, they're against everything. For example, some think even Christian rap music with a positive message is evil. |
Unbelievable. How did you get 70%. When California did their poll after prop 8, it was 56%. Nice way to lie. I mean exaggerate |
FWIW, I am a registered independent. I am switch hitter in the poll booth depending on the candidate. It was more so when I lived in Florida. Living in this area has forced me to lean more towards the democratic party when voting. No one who knows me would call me a liberal. But it's nice of you or stupid, take your pick, to think that just because someone vote democrat that are liberal in all things. D you also think that republicans are all right-wing David Duke wannabes. |
There are a lot of men who are not particularly religious who are anti-gay. Example: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2766213 Maybe as one earlier poster pointed out with women i'ts a Christian thing. With men it's more often a manhood thing. |
I didn't disagree with this in my post or even bring this up at all, really. I was just responding to the PP who referred to black people as a "left-leaning liberal group." Again, in my experience, many vote Dem but are pretty conservative, some being extremely so. I admittedly interact with more men than women, though. I wasn't discounting non-religion-based homophobia. Hardaway's words were very hateful, and of course he's not the only person who thinks like that. Interestingly, he has apparently made a turn around. In part PR motivated, I'm sure, but it seems like he really has grown as a person. http://www.towleroad.com/2007/09/tim-hardaway-tu.html http://outsports.com/jocktalkblog/2011/08/19/tim-hardaway-once-anti-gay-stands-up-for-gay-rights-in-el-paso/ |
I don't buy that they are so conservative - except for this issue. Polls show that black attitudes toward abortion are about the same as the national average. Marriage rates don't reflect an overall conservative view about marriage among the hetero population. I don't think that blacks are particularly conservative on government spending, medicare, social security, job creation. I don't think they are particularly conservative on foreign policy. I really can't think of any major issues where blacks stand out as conservative, except on this one. Can you identify other areas where blacks are statistically conservative besides gay rights? |
I think I made sure to mention in both my posts that I was speaking from my experience only. I don't know statistics for what you're looking for and I don't feel like researching. I can continue to speak from my experience because I don't really feel like getting academic right now. You don't have to "buy" it, although I don't think you need to be so skeptical about something I've shared as being personal experience only. For the group of people I'm talking about (generally women, very religious Christians, very socially conservative), things they frown upon include: 1. Sex outside of marriage 2. Dating outside of your religion 3. For some, being close friends with people outside of your religion 4. Non-gospel music 5. Abortion Again, this is from my experience. These people are just like religious extremists of any race. Most people I know (including most black people I know) are pro gay rights. I'm not denying that anti-gay black people exist. It's just that if (as Pew Research Center Stats from 2012 show) 49 percent of blacks oppose gay marriage and 39 percent of blacks of support gay marriage, I'm overwhelmingly around 39 percenters. And the ones I know who are against it are mainly in online communities and they're religious to the point of being against a ton of things. |
And when I posted at 22:19, I meant to type I interact with more women than men. Guess it's time for me to go to bed. |
If you are talking about women who do not have sex outside of marriage, then you are speaking about a very thin slice of Black America. I understand that these strict, churchgoing women exist. But come on, 3/4 of black children are born out of wedlock! These women are not the average for the community. |
