I think part of the problem is no one knows what color the other lanes have. The left-turn/u-turn drive may know to yeild to right-turns but may think that lane has a red light. |
OP here. Exactly. I am at this intersection daily as the right-turner and I always end up giving way to the U-turner (when present, which is actually quite frequently), because they seem to think I am turning right on red. |
| OP, the intersection as you describe seems to violate the laws of traffic design (two drivers from different directions both with green arrows). I agree with you, however. I think the right turner tops the U turner but in practice should go ahead and yield to U turner (apparently not at your intersection but most times I see a U turner, they are lost). |
OP again- I think a lot of cars make a U-turn here because they really wanted to make a left at the intersection before, but the wait there is longer. If they go up to the next light and do a U, they can quickly go back and make the right turn (if that makes sense). I never pay attention long enough to see if this is always the case, but considering how many U-turns I see at this intersection it is my guess. |
