| We have an Akita he fits all of the above. They are not barkers thatbyapmat everything. When there is a reason he barks. They are gat with kids. Not great with other dogs...so not a great dog park dog...but he is a great brother to our cat and they play all the time. If you want a dog to play fetch...this is also not the one. An Akita will look at you like you are crazy if you throw a ball. Very intelligent breed. |

Bernese Mountain Dog. Absolutely sweethearts with their family, especially kids, but you can literally feel your chest rattle when she barks. Not a guard dog, but an awesome watch dog. Will bark at anyone - stranger or not - who comes to the front door.
I credit my Berner with deterring a would-be burglar while I was home during maternity leave. Some guy came knocking at my door. I never answer the door when I'm home alone, but our 115 lbs. Berner made her presence known. He stopped knocking and made his way down our front steps. I continued to peek outside and watch the guy walk to our next door neighbor's house. When no one comes to the door after he knocks, he gets on his phone and in a minute or so, a car pulls up to the house. I see them disappear on the side of the house, so I call the police. Turns out they broke into a small basement window. Without my dog, it would've been our house that got burglarized, or worse, a home invasion with me and my newborn. Whole thing freaked me out. |
| An English Mastiff. No one is coming on my property. |
| My French Ring III Belgian Malinois can make it from the front door to the gate in under 3 seconds. My gate is clearly marked as such. Like the mastiff folks, no one comes on my property. Should you get past the Mali, the Rottweiler will pick up the slack. |
Yeah, these dogs and mastiffs should be banned from civilized countries. Don't come crying to DCUM when it tears the throat out of one yours or your neighbors children. Why would you want a dog that makes your property totally unsafe for guests? |

I train and compete with my dogs in multiple dog sports. I have owned 3 Rottweilers, and I love the breed. My current 6- year old male has a stellar temperament, and he is amazing with children.
That being said, I would not recommend the breed to the casual owner. They are simply a LOT of dog, especially for a suburban environment. There is a reason why Labs have been the most popular breed for ages. If you want something with a slightly more serious guarding instinct (but still less than a Malinois, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, etc.) , consider a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. |

18:03 here. I am a different poster than 17:27, for the record...

Learn something about dogs and dog sport then come back and talk about my dogs. Your half trained dog is far more dangerous than mine. Dogs that successfully compete at the top levels of dog sport are highly intelligent, stable and safe. My guests have nothing to worry about. Does your dog obey your every command immediately, completely and without fail off the leash and collar? Mine do. Does your dog resist any food that is place under his nose, tossed in his direction or offered to him without fail? Mine do. Learn what you are talking about then come back and have a rational discussion. |
I am the poster who has owned 3 Rottweilers. My current dog has achieved the AKC Utility Dog title, Tracking Dog title, and is working on his agility champion title. His pedigree is full of ScH dogs from Germany and the Netherlands; he is no slouch. He absolutely fulfills the criteria you outline above. That being said, he is not the appropriate dog for the average "pet owner" household. Most people cannot/do not want to train to this level. And that is FINE, but they need t realize that and get the appropriate dog. 18:01-STFU |
Ok, crazy. OP is not a professional dog trainer. Your highly trained weapon is fine for you--clearly not the typical dog owner. And you said NO ONE comes on your property. You sound completely nuts. |
Nicole Brown Simpson had an Akita and she and Ron Goldman both had their throats slit. The dog barked but didn't atta.ck OJ |
LOL, I like sounding nuts. It keeps the real crazies away! |
|
Any little dog is useless and would not scare anyone.
Agre with PP that it depends on the dog FAR more than the breed, OP. I have had dogs all my life and have had full size dobermans bark at nothing and mutts bark at the "right" things. |
+1 with our goldendoodle. |
The dog knew OJ as part of the family. Also, please understand that the average dog that bites is a fear biter. It is a dog with a high defense drive (most dogs operate out of prey drive) that will bite in a situation such as that. Most will bark and run. |
