Use of the word "bitter" on DCUM

By why is that the default response when one realizes people have made different choices than oneself and that they are comfortable with those choices? Why is the automatic reaction "Well then, you must be bitter and envious because you don't have/don't want what I have or what I covet" ?
Go know. That's all I can tell you. If you want to know why women don't support each other and embrace the different choices that are available to us because we live in a free society you are as confused as I am.
