insignificant rant - diet coke

"Made With Real Sugar!" is the new health food, don't you know. Much healthier than corn syrup or artificial sweetener.

So wrong. Artificial sweeteners are terrible. Much worse than sugar, no matter what you call it.

Diet sodas are linked to weight gain.

I can't stand Diet Coke, and the one time a week that I go out to eat, I like a nice, sugary, HCFS-filled regular Coke, not some disgusting chemically-flavored, nasty-aftertaste Diet Coke.

I think we were separated at birth. If nothing else, you are my long lost best friend.

Where do you get that, and how is it responsive to OP's question?

Neither are healthy. Diet Coke will make you fatter than regular Coke.

I KNEW someone else out there has had this same experience!! As to the type of restaurant, the reason I even bothered starting this thread is because today, it was a nice restaurant. Famous chef level of nice. The only nice restaurant in the neighborhood where I work (apparently). So yes, I do expect them to get things right and am cutting less slack than I do for the cheaper suburban restaurants where I usually eat.

And I don't think it's a hint that I need Diet Coke. I'm not overweight (or underweight for that matter). I just happen to wonder if most women who are around 40 tend to drink Diet Coke, and as I approach that magic number, if that's why I'm getting it more often. I just love my regular, extra-fizzy, extra-sweet, refreshing Coke!

Diet coke is nasty and tastes like shit. If you're going to drink coke at all, just go for the real thing. Go big or go home!

Agreed. I am trying to limit consumption but allow myself regular soda when out to eat. I tried switching to Diet Coke, but found myself ready to ingest massive amounts of sweets afterward and it appears that the chemicals in Diet Coke are responsible for this. Ick. The stuff is poison.

Hmm, never happens to me at restaurants. Don't know why they would think Coke means Diet Coke? I can see how annoying that would be. Maybe when ordering you can be very clear that you want Regular Coke instead of Diet, like very very clear.

This is like saying "yum, the pig feces tastes so much better than the cow feces."

Who cares? It's all still shit.

I don't think it's necessarily profiling... I'm a 30ish woman, have always ordered Diet Coke (it's what I grew up with, what I like -- regular Coke tastes gross to me), and people bring me regular Coke maybe 1 time in 5 or 10. It's annoying to send it back, I agree.

I've never had this experience, but what I do find is that you order a Diet Coke in restaurant and the wait staff will often bring a Diet Pepsi without making sure you know they serve Pepsi products first. Those two sodas do not taste the same!

And I'm a Coke Zero fan. Coke taste, no calories. Wish more restaurants would serve it!

Often I find myself being the only one who says "thank you" - the customer should be thanked not the thanker! And I love it when they say "mmm-hmmm" or "no problem" in response.

Bottom line: specify regular coke even if it sounds like you are talking down to them because you probably have to in order to get what you want.

Maybe there's no attention to detail because they make minimum wage. I'm not saying the lack of attention is acceptable. What I'm saying is there's really no motivation to do well. Really low wages, no benefits, no health insurance... that would be soul sucking indeed.

I still don't get it. It's a simple job and they shouldn't make mistakes. If I made a mistake in my job I would never hear the end of it. I actually feel sorry for doctors because they don't get to make mistakes but somehow every time I go through a drive-thru or deal with something similar I encounter people making mistakes.

Frankly, because people make mistakes and don't seem to care that they made a mistake. They don't learn from their mistakes. They take the "devil may care" attitude of the former BK burger slinger above (who I hope has improve her attitude with age).

Plus, I don't think it's necessarily profiling. I sat at lunch today at a table with 10 people in our office. I actually notice that the half of us that had soda all had diet something. Everyone else had water. Of the 10 people, 7 were men. It may just be that the waiters get a lot of people ordering diet Coke and can't tell the difference by looking at it in the glass. If it was a restaurant where the soda is poured from a hose at the bar, the bartender may have heard the order wrong or simply pressed the wrong button. How's the waiter to know if it doesn't come in a bottle or can labeled "Coke".
