Most Beauvoir girls will be accepted at NCS, but not all apply. Like prior posters said: it really is a diverse school and the 4th grade schools of choice reflect that diversity. I'd say 26-30 ( out of 40 in a class of 80 kids) go to NCS and the other ten to fifteen or so go to: GDS, Maret, Sidwell and Holton. Some go to Horace Mann. |

You are making a decision on your child's education based on whether or not "YOU feel comfortable at a reception?" OP, look in the mirror. There's your problem. |

Here is why I love Beauvoir and maybe you will too: Today my child who is in 3rd grade experienced the following:
he went to an assembly in Taylor Hall in which he and his class learned about wounded wild animal rehabilitation by an expect who brought two owls and a hawk with her. The children learned all about the abilities ( including infa red vision) of these animals, their hunting habits " hey mom, did you know that in the wild if you are slow AND dumb , you are dinner" . The kids also learned how each animal had been injured( in a fight with another hawk or hit by a car) , and what was done to help restore the animal to health. Next he went to science where the biology lesson of what is the composition of human blood: ratio of RBC's , to plasma to plateletts was taught by having the kids add red hots and mini marsh mellows to their own petri dishes, which , of course, my son wanted to dare me to drink after school, but I digress. Some where else in their there he worked on the preparations for the upcoming museum night ( his class studied the archeology, native peoples, food , topography, language and politics of Mexico for three months) , had some journal writing time, and math . Oh, and of course two recess on that beautiful play ground of rolling hills, zip lines, and slide tunnels. |
The pool opens around memorial day and closes just after labor day. If Beauvoir kids take lessons, as mine did, it is in the summer. The pool is great, but FYI, it is not included in the tuition and , I think, Beauvoir families pay the same fee as non-Beauvoir families. |
I think there is an adjustment because much at Beauvoir is very experiential learning and both NCS and STA have more traditional teaching models. That being said, girls who go on to NCS are very bright so it is not too much of a challenge. For some, it is something that they have been ready for for a while. |
This sounds like my son's day!! Waving at my fellow Beauvoir 3rd grade parent . . . |
And you're going to find them at many public schools too! |
My DD was very well prepared. She has done well at NCS. |

Swimming lessons are available at St. Albans pool (indoor) year round. |
| New Beauvoir parent here. We are not rich, but are professionals. One reason we chose Beavoir is that the parents and faculty made us feel so welcome. I had reservations due to us being middle class and hearing of a lot about a lady's lunch crowd. There are a couple of well dressed folks, but that's just dress rather than personality. Beauvoir has exceeded my expectations. It's a lovely place and my Pre-k kidis loved and allowed to be four without concerns for the occasional leg grabbing, meltdown, and nurse going. The staff are great and the school is a well-oiled machine. It's a gem. |
| OP, this is 10:15 checking back in. Curious what you thought about the coffee on Tuesday. Have you decided what to do? |
I'm the OP. We sent in our acceptance letter yesterday. Were very happy with the place and were blown away by the kindness of both faculty and parents. To the poster who recommended I look in the mirror because I wanted to be sure we (parents) were comfortable at the school, please understand our number 1 priority is our child. We already knew our child would be happy at Beauvoir and had narrowed down the school to two choices, both of which would be great environments for our child. So we limited it further by focusing on the school community. TO us, that is important. We want to be a part of the school community and to enjoy the community members!
