most overused/trendy baby boy names?

Anonymous
Agree that all the -adens are very trendy. But I agree that you should go with what you want, popularity be damned. I really wanted to name my DS Matthew, but DH wouldn't have it because the name was "too common."
So what did we name our son? Max--which is still a very common name and which I've seen lots of people on this list say they're "sick of." LOL.

I agree that you should go with what you like (or pick a family name) no matter how popular it is. We went with a fairly unique name (DH is an English teacher and its the last name of one of DH's favorite writers) and many on here would probably say they hate it because we used a last name as a first name (a cardinal sin on DCUM).

Point is, either way, some people will hate it and others will love it, no matter the popularity.

honestly, whatever name you choose, it may end up being trendy. We named our son Jonah, thinking it was a traditional yet sort of unique name, and now we know at least 4 other jonahs, and inevitably when we're out somewhere I'll hear random parents calling for their Jonahs. Bums me out a little but I loved the name and love it still, so it is what it is.

one piece of advice is to keep the name to yourself until after the baby is born. For some reason people have no problem giving you negative feedback on your kids name when he hasn't arrived yet (maybe they think they will save you from a grave mistake and you will reconsider?). But once you've put it on a birth certificate people generally will just say positive things or nothing at all...

Pretentious.

I don't understand your rationale. It's a name, not a commodity. Why are you treating it like one? Only a rare and special name will do for your unique little snowflake?

Is the name Beckett? (as in Samuel Beckett)

I went to undergrad with a Beckett. I always thought it was a cool name. He was a total hippie

Seriously. They probably named their "snowflake" Brooklyn or Aaden...

You can't go wrong with traditional, non trendy names for boys, even if they are popular. Michael, Matthew, Henry, William, etc have all stood the test of time and they dont scream "I was born in suburbia circa 2008!". You can't say the same for names like Jaxon/Jackson, Aiden/Brayden/Caden/Jayden, etc.

I have a 9mo Jonah and I've never met another one or heard anyone say it on the playground (in the past 4 years that I've been going to playgrounds) ... but you're right that any name you choose can become popular or trendy after you choose it. I tried to hedge my bets by doing my SSA website research and we STILL have ended up with some names in the mix that would be considered trendy (though not made up like the -adens). E.g. Harper, my oldest son's middle name ... wasn't in the top 1000 in 2007 when he was born, so we thought we were safe. Ha. Once we got to Jonah I was having such a hard time finding a name I liked that I had to let it go about the popularity. The truth is that even the most popular names are not as popular now as they were 30 years ago. My oldest's preschool has a huge variety of names -- there aren't two of anything in any class and there aren't that many repeats in the whole school. If you want to avoid the very most popular ones, check the SSA site. They also have a function where you can track the popularity of a name over time, so you can see if a name you have chosen is trending up or down. It's pretty interesting. The name Jonah, for example, started trending up in 1993 -- after the movie Sleepless in Seattle was released (the little boy in the movie was named Jonah). There are a lot of examples like that where you can point to a specific reason why a name got popular.

I had a Flynn right before Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr named their kid Flynn. It really annoyed because I fear others following the celebrity trend, but oh well. I still like the name. There's nothing you can do. I also have a first name that was very unique when I was born but that got really popular about 15 years later. Can't really predict these things, so jsut go with what you like.

Mason, Oliver, Henry, Chase, Sam, Max - of course I love them all! But those seem to be common.
