Haha you are calling her dumb? Even I know that dishwashers are hardwired!!! |
| OP, you will be fine if you cut off the circuit breaker. This is how electricians do their work, they turn off the power to the circuit and then rewire it. Just MAKE SURE you turn of the right breaker and test the dishwasher. However, do NOT file the cord, you could cause a short and a fire, please do a clean break if end up having to cut it. most likely the dishwasher is hard wired iwth wire nuts so you might not have to do any cutting at all, just unscrew the wire nut. If your husband discovers it you can just "guess" that it came loose on its own. |
Oh the irony of your post. Pray do tell, how blissful is arrogant ignorance? |

DH says the best way to break a dishwasher (so it can't be fixed) is to get water into the electrical panel.
He also says most dishwashers do have a plug and aren't hard-wired. |
Well your husband is no Bob Vila for sure. Please don't make me google it for you and your not so manly husband. It is possible for them to have a receptical and when you are being sold a DW, the sales person will try to sell you a conversion kit. Most installers don't bother with that unless there is aready a plug there. I've been trough 4 kitchen remodels and was the GC for two of them. |
PP you're laughing at here. Ours is plugged in. |
| I don't specifically recall my dishwasher, but I do know that all my other appliances are simply plugged in. |
No, you've just never looked behind yours. |

I'm going to out myself as a DCUM user because I always post this on my FB when presented with ideas like this. But I cannot resist.
OP, are you wearing these, by chance?: http://www.hulu.com/watch/10310/saturday-night-live-bad-idea-jeans Seriously this might be the worst idea I've heard of in a long time. PP had the right idea. Seriously, hand wash the dishes and leave something revolting, like avocado on it. Do this for days. Also, switch to 7th generation natural dishwashing soap. (Seriously, that stuff is so bad, we tried it in order to go green and it looked like our dishes were covered in cat vomit). Set the plates in front of him and say "oh dear, this is dirty. The dishwasher is not getting the dishes very clean lately." And then just up the ante constantly. Bits of pork chop, you name it, should be stuck to those plates. Consider making oatmeal, just because that can stick to everything. And make sure you give him a nice tall glass of water with chunks of something weird floating in it. I'm laughing so hard at my ideas that I'm waking my husband up. BTW, yes, you are totally stuck in the 50's but I'll enable you if you need it.

Yes, there is a risk because someone will flip the breaker and the wires may be shorted at that point. You will flip the breaker back on because you want your fridge or range or lights to work. |
I love all of the know-it-alls on this site. The answer is that they are done both ways. Sometimes you direct wire it, and sometimes you plug it in. Either way, it's white / black / ground. Read any installation manual. |
+1 |
dishwasher is supposed to be an a dedicated circuit |
Well then the husband will because that's the one thing anyone would check. . Either way You don't want a short. |
| OP, can you just order a new dishwasher and have it installed without telling him? He probably won't notice. |
