Is it hard to make bread? Should I get a breadmaker?

I wish my bread maker would make a smaller loaf
The bread goes stale quickly. And I end up throwing half away

I bake bread/challah every weekend. I used to try on my own and it never really came out well bc I did not have the time/patience to tend to it properly. I now use a breadmaker for the dough and it is absolutely amazing (if I do say so myself). I make the dough in the machine and take it out, braid it, and let is rise again. then I bake it. I will never buy challah again.

I do still buy sliced multigrain bread for sandwiches.

The machines come with recipes to get you started, too. Very easy, so you don't even have to buy a book if you don't want to.

google "no-knead bread". Skip the bread maker.

A lot of these end up at garage sales and flea markets. Must be a reason.

I love mine. I no longer buy bread at the store. It does have to be eaten quickly since there's no preservatives, but you can also use it for bread pudding, french toast, etc.

Same reason you see Treadmills and faddish exercise videos and equipment the next aisle over.

This book is the best. You get a large plastic container with lid from the hardware store, and a pizza stone. Mix together flour, yeast, warm water and salt in the container. Leave to rise for 2 hours. Place container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. The longer you leave the dough, the more of a sourdough taste you give the bread. When you want a fresh loaf of bread just tear off a piece of dough, shape into a loaf, and leave for about 30 minutes. Then cook the loaf. It's that easy. The quality of the bread is great.

FWIW, we baked bread by hand first and will never go back. My DC has food allergies and I'm so not a good cook. The bread machine has been a miracle.

We are looking at this bread machine, we saw it on amazon for about $270- is that the best price?

As of August, I bake all our bread. I decided I didn't like the extra crap in store bread. It isn't hard to bake bread but it does require some planning.

I started with this recipe from Appartment Therapy: No Time Bread.

I am the PP of the Zojirushi comment. We bought it at Bed Bath and Beyond with a 20% coupon. They don't stock them...it had to be sent to our house. Can't remember what the price was....but felt it was a good deal.
